Richard Dettloff Obituary

March 24, 1926, to April 7, 2008

Richard "Dick" Dettloff of Ventura passed away peacefully after a long illness on Monday, April 7, 2008, at home with his loving family by his side.

Dick was born March 24, 1926, in Saginaw, Mich. In his early years he served in the U.S. Navy working on the submarines, he sailed the Great Lakes as a merchant marine and worked as an engineering draft man prior to moving to California in 1954.

Dick obtained his engineering degree in California, worked for three years with the City of Oxnard in the Water Division, eventually moving to Ventura and after 23 years, retired with the City of Ventura as water superintendent in 1985.

Dick is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ame-Karin Dettloff; son Eric Dettloff; daughter-in-law, Lisa Dettloff; grandchildren, Alyssa and Matthew Dettloff; daughter, Lise Bruun; son-in-law, Richard Bruun; and grandchildren, Tove and Noah Bruun.

His family and friends will always remember him from his strength, his sense of humor, his passion for life and his love for his family.

In honor of Dick's wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes scattered at sea by private service. His family would like to thank his longtime physician, Dr. James Estes, and his nurse, Barbara Osborn, and Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Dick Dettloff with a memorial donation in his memory to Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, 805-642-1608.

To the Detloff family:
I am deeply sorry for your loss. I read of it, only today, in the Ventura Star that I continue to receive, in Austin, to where I've retired. All the years that I've known Dick, today is the first time I realize that we had the same birthday.

Dick's passing is my loss, too. I considered him a good friend, even when I didn't see him often after he retired from the City of Ventura.

It was in 1972, when I was project manager for W.M. Lyles Co., the contractor installing 5 miles of the 8 Mile 30" Water Pipeline Project, that I first met Dick (and Jim Small).

It was a tough project (going down the middle of Ventura Avenue) that went very well, in no small part due to Dick and Jim. From then on, until Dick and Jim retired, I would try to drop in to visit with them, at the Water Division Yard, as often as I could.

Dick was always fun to talk to. He had a terrific sense of humor and I always valued that in him, along with his honesty, integrity and compassion.

Dick was a special human being and I will miss him.

Some of my best memories are on Arbor street and the Dettloff family was always involved. I remember trying to ding dong ditch your house and Mr. Dettloff always knowing, would be standing in the dark right by the bushes to your house. We never could play that trick on your DAD! Lise was one of my first friends as a young child and I will never forget the times we shared. I am very sorry for your loss. My thougths and prayers are with the family at this time. Love to you all,

My condolences to the family. It was truly a pleasure to know Dick, what little I did. My father (Merle Hensley aka Kansas) always talked highly of him and respected him a great deal. I know he will be missed but his memories will live on.
Stay Strong,
Gary M. Hensley

To all the family, Eric and the kids, Laurie and I send our condolences and our prayers go with you and your dad.
My entry into and eventual career in the Water Industry was in no small means facilitated by your dad and I will always be grateful for his leadership and guidance in that. He was quite a man and will be very much missed.

dick, I can't count the times that jim & I , Anna & you went to the water conventions. the good times we had, sometimes frustrating, but they are very memoral & vivid in my mind from San Diego to San Fransisco, oh what fun it was. I remember you trying to teach a group of us how to play chess oh what a disaster that was. i'm sure if your comrade & friend , jim, were here he would have so much to say. i'm sure you might be talking to him by now. hang in there until we meet again & we love you dick. jyene & family
