Barry was one of the two brightest stars of our class. The other being Joe Alsop. The two of them were in a league of their own. Whatever interests Barry held, we all knew he would be at the top of his field. He lived the dream we all had in those early years.

My sincere condolences to the entire Scherr family. I knew Barry as an undergraduate in the 1970s and then reconnected with him in recent years as I returned to the Russian studies field after a hiatus of more than two decades. His encouragement and advice helped me immensely. Barry was a model scholar and compassionate human being. It was my immense good fortune to have known and worked with him.

Barry was a wonderful mentor and friend to me throughout my career at Dartmouth and since my retirement, as associate dean for the humanities, provost, and then as a friend to me and my husband, Richard Stamelman. He was thoughtful, incisive, supportive, warm, and funny. He had a wonderful laugh. He was a strong leader who modeled integrity and care for his colleagues and spoke eloquently about the importance of the liberal arts. I was incredibly lucky to have him to advise me when I needed it most and to be able to share a warm and rewarding friendship with him and Sylvia. We extend our condolences to Sylvia and the family. We will miss him.

I was fortunate to have Barry serve as Associative Dean for the Humanities when I served as Dean of the Faculty. Through his diligence and undraising efforts Dartmouth was able to create the Leslie Humanities Center. Barry was a friend and colleague.

I am writing to offer my condolences to Barry's family and to share a memory. Though Barry was my Russian professor for only my first year studying the language and culture, we remained in touch as my work later in life became focused on Russia, its transition during the Yeltsin and its relationship with the west. I had a few dozen occasions to visit Dartmouth through the years, each time reaching out to invite Barry for tea. I can't recall his ever being unavailable. We stayed in touch via e mail as well until just a few months ago. I will miss Barry's positive, soft-spoken mentorship, his gentle spirit and friendship .

Dear Former, Long-time Neighbors from Hopson Road in Norwich-My sister Mary & I want to express our sincere condolences to your family. We have such fond memories of living next door to you for so many years. I particularly remember the long discussions Barry had with my dad, Dan Davis, when they were both working outdoors. I think they enjoyed each other immensely. I know you all have so many fond memories, too. I hope they will give you comfort in the days to come. Our thoughts & prayers are with you, Charlene & Mary Davis
