Carroll F. Ketchum
Bethel, VT — Carroll F. Ketchum, 84 of Bethel died unexpectedly, Saturday, February 26, 2022 at his home.
He was born October 4, 1937 in Randolph; the son of Francis W. and Mildred (Durocher) Ketchum. He attended a one room school on Stockbridge Common for six years, then graduated from Whitcomb High School in Bethel in 1955. After graduation he was employed at National White River Bank in Bethel, where he started as a bookkeeper and progressed to Teller, Assistant Cashier, Cashier, and finally Director of the Bank. The bank changed to Proctor Trust Company then Proctor Bank, then Green Mountain Bank and finally to Mascoma Savings Bank. Mr. Ketchum retired in April 2000 after working in the same building for 45 years. Carroll lived on the family farm in Stockbridge until 1968 when he married Marguerite E. Merrill in Hookset, NH. During his lifetime he was very active in community affairs. He was a member of White River Masonic Lodge #90 A.F. & A.M. since 1964 and served as Lodge Master in 1971, 1972, 1975 and 1976. He was a member of Bethel Area Rotary Club for 42 years where he served as president, managed the club's scholarships, as was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the United Church of Bethel since 1968. Carroll handled many scholarships for Whitcomb High School. He served as Trustee of Public Funds for Stockbridge and Bethel since 1973. He also served as Bethel Town Moderator for 25 years. He was a charter member of the Bethel Business Association, where he served in all capacities. He was a member of the Bethel Library Association where he served as President for 10 years and was a board member for the Vermont Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired. Carroll was recognized as the Community Banker of the Year by the Vermont Bankers Association. He served as a State Representative in Montpelier 2001-2004. Carroll's hobbies included travelling, gardening and wood working. One of the highlights of his life was working in Yellowstone National Park during his first year of retirement, and spending time with his grand daughter.
Survivors include his wife Marguerite Ketchum, daughter Holly and her wife Isabelle Montgomery; son Jay and wife Mandy Ketchum; brother Robert Ketchum, sister Janice Ketchum Marcotte; grand-daughter Jorgia Jean Ketchum. He was predeceased by his parents and brother Donald "Pudge" Ketchum.
Memorial Services and Masonic Ritual will be held at 2:00pm Sunday, March 13th at the United Church of Bethel with Pastor Thomas Harty officiating. There are no calling hours.
