Lawrence Lacy Obituary

Lawrence Christian Lacy, of Waco, passed away peacefully, Sunday, June 26, 2011. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 7, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Jimmie Johnson officiating.

Lawrence Lacy was born Aug. 21, 1919, in Waco, to Walter G. Lacy Sr. and Lucile Cooper Lacy. He attended Waco public schools and graduated from Waco High School in the class of 1936. Lawrence attended Texas A&M University and the University of Southern California, where he was affiliated with Sigma Alpha Epsilon, social fraternity, and Alpha Kappa Psi, business fraternity. He attended Baylor University while waiting to enter Northwestern University Naval Midshipman School in 1940.

Lawrence was commissioned as Ensign, USNR, June 3, 1941, and served as Turret Gun Officer aboard the Battleship USS Idaho for 30 months in both Atlantic and Pacific theaters, and was present during the Aleutian Islands Campaign, Gilbert Island Campaign, Battle of Midway Island, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.He then was Air Defense Officer on the USS Alaska for 18 months and was discharged as a Lieutenant Commander in October of 1945.

After his service in WWII, Lawrence returned to Waco and in 1955, became a Senior Vice President at the Citizens National Bank, now The Bank of America.

He served as Campaign Chairman and President of Waco United Way and Waco Camp Fire Girls; President of the Rotary Club of Waco; and director of the Citizens National Bank and the Community Bank and Trust, Texas Bankers Association, Waco Chamber of Commerce, Hillcrest Baptist Hospital, Baylor Bear Club and Baylor Stadium Corporation.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Waco, Ridgewood Country Club and Lakewood Tennis Club. Lawrence was also a member of the James H. Lockwood Lodge #1343, York Rite and Scottish Rite Bodies, Karem Shrine Temple and the Red Cross of Constantine.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Walter G. Lacy Jr. and wife, Harriette, and Roane M. Lacy Sr. and wife, Marjorie; and his sister, Mrs. Julius Taylor and husband, Julius "Red" Taylor.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Ann Kokernot Lacy; his four children, Elizabeth Winn and husband, Jim, Chris Lacy and wife, Dawn, Ann Brown and husband, Cletus III, and Golda Brown and husband, Stan. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Molly Winn Burns and husband, Webb, Lacy Winn Sakellaris and husband, George, James Winn, Kristin Lacy Cavness and husband, Buddy, Lance Lacy and wife, Brandee, Cletus Brown IV, Edward Brown, Cooper Brown, Jacob Brown and wife, Milana, and Lauren Brown; and eight great-grandchildren, Hayden and Selden Burns, Angenie and Natalie Sakellaris, Madison and Mason Cavness, and Christian and Katherine Lacy.

He also leaves his wonderful and much appreciated caregivers, Judy Gindratt, Tracy Drake, Marsha Daughtry, Soynia Childers, Socorro and Joe Wolcott and all the other Visiting Angels, who cared for him the past two years. Words can never give full meaning to the "Loving Care" he received under their watch!!!

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Walter Lacy III, Tom Lacy, David Lacy, Roane Lacy Jr., Heyward Taylor and Rhett Taylor, and his grandsons, James Winn, Lance Lacy, Cletus Brown IV, Edward Brown and Jacob Brown. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Abner McCall Bible Class of the First Baptist Church in Waco.

Memorials may be made to the Scholarship Fund of the Rotary Club of Waco, Baylor University or to the charity of choice.

My mother, the late Faye Russell always thought so highly of Mr. Lacy...he was "The ultimate gentleman and wise businessman" she used to say. As a child, I enjoyed friendship with several of the Lacy children, Elizabeth and Chris primarily. To all the family, my sincere condolences, Waco has lost a very special citizen.
