Columbus, GA- ELIZABETH PITTS, THE BOOK OF PROVERBS, CHAPTER 31 "WOMAN OF VIRTUE," PASSED INTO GLORY ON JUNE 29, 2014 AT COLUMBUS HOSPICE HOUSE. VISITATION WILL BE ON MONDAY, JUNE 30, 2014 FROM FIVE TO SEVEN AT STRIFFLER HAMBY ON MACON ROAD. THE PRAISE AND WORSHIP SERVICE WILL BE OFFERED AT 1 P.M. ON TUESDAY, JULY 1, 2014 AT WYNNTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
ELIZABETH WAS BORN ON JULY 7, 1913, IN ASHBURN, GA, TO HARRISON MARTIN AND MATTIE BELLE HORNE HARP. SHE FINISHED SCHOOL AT ASHBURN HIGH AND THEN WENT TO SOUTHERN SHORTHAND AND BUSINESS COLLEGE IN ATLANTA FROM WHICH SHE GRADUATED. SHE WORKED AT THE GEORGIAN NEWSPAPER WHERE SHE MET BOB EUGENE SHIRLEY WHOM SHE MARRIED IN 1932. TOGETHER THEY REARED FOUR CHILDREN. THEY MOVED TO A FARM IN UPSON COUNTY IN 1941 WHERE SHE RAISED HER FAMILY. AFTER HER HUSBAND'S UNTIMELY DEATH IN 1955, SHE MOVED TO BARNESVILLE WHERE SHE WORKED AT CARTER'S MILL. IN 1958 SHE MARRIED W.M. PITTS , JR, ACQUIRING ANOTHER DAUGHTER. THEY MOVED FROM THOMASTON TO WARNER ROBINS WHERE W.M. ACCEPTED THE POSITION OF MINISTER OF MUSIC AT SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH AND SHE WORKED AT ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE. UPON HIS DEATH IN 1991, SHE MOVED TO COLUMBUS, GA, MAKING MANY NEW FRIENDS AND CONTINUING TO SERVE THE LORD WITH JOY. SHE WAS TRULY THE MOST SELFLESS, LOVING PERSON WE HAVE EVER KNOWN, HUMBLY SINGING GOD'S PRAISES ALWAYS. LAST YEAR SHE CELEBRATED HER 100TH BIRTHDAY SURROUNDED BY HER LOVING FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
SHE IS SURVIVED BY HER CHILDREN: ROBERT E SHIRLEY, SR, (BETTY) OF HILTON HEAD ISLAND; LINDA SHIRLEY TWIGGS (WALLACE) OF COLUMBUS; GLENDA PITTS CANNON (JOHN JAYCOX) OF FAYETTEVILLE, GA; AND JOANN SHIRLEY BLOUNT (SONNY) OF LAKE LANIER, GA. SHE WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HER DAUGHTER, JANE SHIRLEY MCILVAINE, OF SMYRNA, GA, WHOSE HUSBAND JOHN SURVIVES HER, AND BY HER ELDEST GRANDSON, ROBERT E. SHIRLEY, JR. SURVIVING GRANDCHILDREN ARE BENJAMIN E. SHIRLEY; JOHN JAMESON MCILVAINE, III (CAROL), MABLETON, GA; ELIZABETH MCILVAINE WOOD (RICH), DULUTH, GA; JENNIFER TWIGGS COWART (JIM) OF WARNER ROBINS; MATTHEW W. TWIGGS (NELL), YORKTOWN, VA; WESLEY M. TWIGGS (GINGER), LOUISVILLE, KY; JEFF CANNON, ROCK SPRINGS, WY; JASON CANNON (CHRISTY), MABLETON, GA; JOHN R BLOUNT (ANDREA) OF SUWANEE, GA. THE GREATEST JOY OF HER LAST TWENTY YEARS HAS BEEN THE ADDITION OF 21 BEAUTIFUL GREAT GRANDCHILDREN.

So sorry to hear of Elizabeth's fall and now, her death. We were very glad to see her at Mrs. Lowery's funeral in May. She looked lovely,as usual. She recognized/remembered everyone. We will surely miss her. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
