ANIL MALHOTRA Obituary

MALHOTRA ANIL KUMAR MALHOTRA Anil, age 75, passed away on Friday, August 22, 2014 at his home in Chevy Chase, MD. Beloved husband of Ena; cherished father of daughter Shibani and son Akhil (Kim), and doting grandfather of Nikhil. He is also survived by his sister, Renu, and his brother, Arun (Uma). He was a model husband, father, colleague, mentor, boss, and friend, always modest about his accomplishments, and known for his integrity, generosity, and conviction. He showed his promise at an early age, placing first in the country (India) in high school, and going on to receive a B. Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, a Master's degree from MIT, a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, and a PMD from Harvard Business School. In 1970 he established the first offshore engineering design division in India at Engineers India Limited. He was a member of the Science and Technology Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, which, in 1975, produced the first national science and technology plan for India. In 1979 he was appointed Executive Member of the Board of Directors of the Oil & Natural Gas Commission of India, directly responsible for exploration and production of all offshore oil and gas in the country, and in 1984, became the Chief Operating Officer of the $5 billion oil company. Anil joined the World Bank in 1986 and worked on a variety of assignments in the field of energy in Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, India, Nepal, Myanmar (Burma), Philippines, and Vietnam. He and Ena lived in Hanoi for several years and he was responsible for the design and implementation of a rural electrification project for the country, which by 2004 provided electricity to over 90% of its population. He returned to the U.S. in 2005 for health reasons, but continued to be engaged, designing courses and lecturing at the Indian School of Business, starting a blog, and writing professional papers. He is author of several books including Ocean Science and Technology, A Passion to Build, Straight from the Heart, Reflections of a Curious Mind, Pioneers of Offshore Technology, Obama and Me, and Musings of a Curious Mind. His first novel - A Just Cause - will be published posthumously. Anil received several awards during his lifetime, among them the President's Gold Medal on his graduation from IIT, Kharagpur, a medal from the Government of Vietnam in recognition of his contribution to the energy sector, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT, and more recently, the Lifetime Achievement Award by Petro Tech-2014 at their International Oil & Gas Conference. Friends will be received at Pumphrey's Bethesda Chevy Chase Funeral Home, 7557 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD at 9 a.m.; a funeral service will follow at 9:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to MedStar Washington Hospital Center Heart Institute, 110 Irving Street NW, Washington, DC 20010.
