BARBARA B. WHITCOMB  
Barbara B. Whitcomb of Silver Spring, MD passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2013. She was the beloved mother of Matthew Whitcomb (Debbi), Julie Whitcomb (Mark Doeler), and Wendy Whitcomb (Daryl Leckron), and the devoted and loving grandmother of Jeremy, Amy, Zoee, and Margot. She was the widow of Dr. David T. Whitcomb.  Barbara was a graduate of Cleveland Heights (Ohio) High School, The Ohio State University, where she was a member of Mortar Board Senior Honor Society, and The George Washington University. Barbara was known for her love of nature, especially birds, flowers, and trees. She often walked in local parks, gardens, and nature trails. She encouraged others to enjoy the sunrise and sunset each day. Family, friends, and neighbors remember Barbara as thoughtful and cheerful, with pleasant greetings and kind words for everyone.  Throughout her life, Barbara helped others by volunteering, giving her time and organizational skills to the Girl Scouts, the League of Women Voters, and other service organizations. For the past seven years, she was an active member of the Red Hat Society. Barbara helped others in her careers as well, especially disabled children and less fortunate seniors, as an Occupational Therapist and a Legal Assistant. She also was the first woman to serve on the Washington County, MD Planning and Zoning Commission. Barbara lived in Silver Spring for more than three decades. Previously, she resided in Hagerstown, MD, several cities in Ohio, and Munich, Germany. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at 11 a.m., in the Reception Hall at Brookside Gardens Visitors Center, 1800 Glenallen Avenue, Wheaton, MD 20902.  Donations in memory of Barbara can be made to The Arbor Day Foundation in Nebraska City, NE, Audubon Naturalist Society in Chevy Chase, MD, or Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, MD.
