Norma:
Recibe las condolencias de mi familia y el mio propio, Carlos fue y es un gran hombre, con mucho amor por el servicio a los demas, sin conocerlos. Agradesco a la vida haber conocido a Carlos y saber de su valor como padre, esposo y bombero.

My introduction to Carlos was at 1 Engine when Medic 31 was the EMS unit running out of there. Carlos was being oriented to the wagon when he slipped off, whacking his head. Initially unconscious, we collared and boarded him. In the medic unit he came to. I still remember vividly every 2-3 minutes him asking "where am I?." Fortunately for all of us, he found himself in the fire & rescue service family for the rest of his life. Vaya con dios mi amigo. May your family be comforted by the love and grace of the Lords.

To Mrs. Norma Alfaro,
I am sorry to hear about your husband. I have not been in the DC area for about 20 years but I happen to come across a newspaper today and saw an article about your husband as I am in town. I recognized the name but not because I knew your husband but because I knew your son. You see I used to go to school with him at Eastern Intermediate and I also lived at Knob Hill Apts back in the 80's. Your son was one of my best friends during 7th and 8th grade and I never saw him after that but maybe once. As I read this article I saw that your son passed away 2 years ago and very touched about it as I have always wondered throughout the years about him. He was one of the nicest guys I have ever known. You may not read this but just wanted to extend my prayers out to you at this most grieving time. God Bless you.

I am saddend to hear about Carlos. I have many fond memories of him from my early years in the fire service. He was a mentor to me and many others. I still tell people about his tendancy to make HOT food for every meal. He was a good cook, a great fire fighter and an exceptional man.

I will never forget the first time we met and we started speaking Spanish to each other. You actually helped me with my broken Puerto Rican spanish.I believe we were two of the very few Spanish speaking firefighters in the county and we did our share of interpreting at many fire and rescue calls. As I think back I can recall your heavy accent, smile and laughter along with your unique "swagger". I appreciated the fact that you had a vision for your future and you didn't let anything stand in your way. We parted ways when I joined the Metropolitan Police Dept. and you the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue. What I realized later is that we both became involved in Organizations involving Hispanics, me with the Spanish Police Officers and you with the Spanish Firefighters. You were truly a kind understanding and caring man with your family and Lord as priorities in your life. You will be sorely missed. Your rewards are truly in heaven. God bless your family during these trying times and may the Lord bring them peace.

We will always remember and cherish Carlos's life. His smile, his knowing wink, his professionalism, his character. No matter what the call was, no matter what his role was at the time, it was always good to see him on the scene. We loved teasing him about his 'accent' and he loved teasing 'us' right back! Thanks for the memories, Carlos!

I am another that was fortunate to know and work with Carlos in the Silver Spring area at one time. He was a dedicated fireman, and talented photographer/videographer. He had one of the most “contagious” smiles I’ve ever seen! He would always have something positive or funny to say, as well. He certainly left an impression on me, and I’ll never forget him. My condolences and deepest sympathies go out to his family and closest friends. God Bless!

It was such a honor to have been associated with the best of the best. What a wonderful person, who will truly be missed. I and the entire crew at Total Audio Visual Systems will remember Carlos always. Please except our deepest sympathy.

July 5, 2009

Without a doubt, one of the finest gentlemen that we have all ever known.

Carlos came to the Takoma Park / Silver Spring area in the early 70's and he sought a way to do something for his new community. He became a respected volunteer firefighter in Takoma Park and then, with those skills and talents, went on to serve all of Montgomery County when he accepted employement as a career firefighter. Most of those years were spent in Silver Spring mainly at Station 16. He developed in to a learned videographer and utilized those talents for the benefit of the entire fire and rescue service.

It was my honor and priviledge to have known Carlos for nearly 40 years.

To his entire family, and his many, many devoted friends, I offer my sincerest sympathy.

Pete Menedis, TPVFD

The loss of a true friend. I first met Carlos in late 1972. We were neighbors. Later, in 1973, I had the provilege of being on of the endorsers on his application for membership with Takoma Park Vol. Fire Dept. He was a dedicated family man. Carlos made many significant key enhancements to our fire service throughout his long career. Well liked,he was also well respected. We'll miss him. Bob Jarboe, TPVFD
