KIRKMAN, CLARA BOGORAD

On Sunday, January 22, 2006, CLARA KIRKMAN, died peacefully at George Washington University Hospital. She had celebrated her 98th birthday on January 6 at Thomas House, where she had lived for five years. A life-long resident of Washington, Clara lived for twenty years at 3001 Veazey Terrace, where she was active in the conversion to a coop. She retired from a career in the federal government in 1969 as an information specialist in the water and air pollution programs at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. In retirement, she enjoyed travels throughout Latin America and Europe. An ardent advocate for good government, she was active in the League of Women Voters and was Vice-President of the DC chapter in the mid-70s. A loyal member of the Womens National Democratic Club, she served on many committees and was engaged in the issues of low-income housing and poverty. Her parents, Henry and Julie Bogorad, emigrated from Russia after being imprisoned by the Czar for revolutionary activities. Clara graduated from Central High School and received her B.A. from George Washington University. Her husband, Harry Kirkman, died in 1954 and her older brother, Sam Bogorad, died in 2002. She is survived by her son, Larry Kirkman, daughter-in-law, Gayle Gibbons, and granddaughter, Clio Kirkman. Per her wishes, no formal services will be held.
