Daniel Pollitt Obituary



POLLITT DANIEL HUBBARD POLLITT Age 88, Graham Kenan Professor of Law emeritus, UNC-Chapel Hill, a beloved professor of constitutional and labor law at UNC since 1957. Born July 6, 1921, Washington, DC, to Mima and Basil Pollitt, died March 5, 2010. Wesleyan University, Connecticut, 1943, WWII 2nd Lieutenant Marine, Pacific Theatre (2 purple hearts), Cornell Law School, 1949. Legal scholar and progressive activist, Dan devoted his life to, and was honored many times for, confronting the major social issues of his time: labor, prisoner, women''s rights, civil liberties, racial equality, death penalty, and peace. State and national board member of ACLU, RAFI-USA, AAUP; chaired the 1974 Citizen''s Investigation into the Harlan, KY Coal Strike. Dan clerked with Judge Henry Edgerton, DC Court of Appearls, then joined civil rights firm of Joseph Rauh in Washington, DC, where he worked on high-profile cases during the anti-Communist witch hunts (Lillian Hellman and Arthur Miller). Dan assisted UNC Basketball Coach Dean Smith in recruiting Charlie Scott, the first African American scholarship athlete at UNC. Dan worked with Rep. Frank Thompson and the US House Subcommittee on Education and Labor during the passage of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, Title IX. Predeceased by wife, Jean Ann Rutledge, daughter of US Supreme Court Justice Wiley Rutledge, and brother Basil Pollitt. Survived by wife, Eleanor Kinnaird; children, Daniel R., Phoebe and Susan; sister, Betty Kenney, five grandsons, 13 nieces and nephews, in-laws Neal Rutledge, wife Caroline, Mary-Lou and Ted Needels.
