David Byrd Shreve

David Byrd Shreve (age 93) died December 30, 2022 in Wilmington, NC. He was predeceased by his parents William Guy Shreve and Effie Mary Byrd; his brothers William and Robert Shreve; sisters Ann Quesenberry and Sarah Radcliffe; and his wife of 60 years, Anne Dean McCarthy.

Dave was raised in Falls Church, VA. He attended St. James Catholic School and Gonzaga College High School with his three brothers, where they enjoyed exasperating the Jesuit teachers. After serving in the occupational forces during World War II, he attended Benjamin Franklin University, earning his CPA accreditation and eventually becoming controller of the National Bureau of Standards (now the National Institute of Standards and Technology). He and Annie left their longtime home in Great Falls, where they raised their family, and retired to Wilmington, where he enjoyed golfing, gardening, and entertaining friends and grandchildren. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, indefatigable curiousity, and generosity to those he loved.

He leaves behind brother Jim Shreve (Judy); daughter Mary Anne Shreve (Steven Collins); and sons Tom Shreve (Trish) and Drew Shreve. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Lynel, Julia (Michael Holman), Anson, Ethan, Leah, Rebekah, Caroline, and Josephine, all of the Greenville, SC area. His great grandchildren are Eugene and Celia Ann Holman.

The family is deeply grateful to Kari Sunwall, Dave's devoted caregiver, for going above and beyond to make his final years as comfortable as possible.

A memorial service will be held in the new year.

Uncle Dave, thanks for being just as bad at golf as me and my Dad. And thanks for introducing my Dad to your younger sister. I used to love the stories of teenagers Dave, Jim and cousin Jack.

I´ve spent so many family dinners with Uncle Dave and Aunt Anne at our house or at there´s, and especially remember the fantastic 4th of July parties with homemade ice cream out at their house in Great Falls. At dinner, I would watch Uncle Dave with mouth agape waiting for something funny to come out as it always did. Rest in peace, dear Dave.

Uncle Dave was there for me in my 20's when I needed help buying a car (he got me a loan) and when I was between residences. I got to stay with him and Anne for a couple of weeks and enjoyed that time. They pampered me! On a business trip to Boulder, he came to my house for a barbecue and we had a great time. I miss his sense of humor and intelligence. I found pictures of him with his siblings at his house in Great Falls, VA, a picture of his parents and family on their 60th wedding anniversary, and one of him and Anne at his nephew Jim's for a family barbecue.

So long, Uncle Dave. I guess that Big Black Packard took you safely to the other side, as in your poem. Now you can goof around with your brothers again. I will miss your wit, intelligence, and affection. [pictures below]
