SASSCER, ELISA ANN

Passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 26, 2004, surrounded by family and friends at the Hospice of Northern VA. Beloved wife of John Magistro; daughter of Alice Kennedy and J. Clarence Sasscer; stepdaughter of Monica Sasscer. Also survived by her brothers and sisters, Cynthia Adams, Gregory Sasscer, Maureen Offutt, Brian Sasscer and Lawrence Sasscer; her nephews, Christopher and Rennix; and nieces, Mary and Mia. Elisa taught us the true meaning of courage, grace and dignity as she carried on against tremendous odds the past 28 months. Elisa will me missed by so many, especially her best friend, Annette Haines; and her faithful canine companion, Ghianda, who brought so much comic relief during these trying times. Services will be held on March 4, 11 a.m at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1427 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria, VA. Friends and family will be received at Quinn Hall immediately following the service. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the NVCC Education Foundation, Inc., 4001 Wakefield Chapel Rd., Annandale, VA 22003-3796 for the Elisa A. Sasscer Memorial Scholarship.

Dear Sasscer Family, We can hardly believe that Elisa is gone. Our first memory of her was as a goodwill ambassador for the neighborhood in 1978 when we first moved in across the street from the Sasscers. I guess that is a good way to describe her life- a goodwill ambassador. She will always be remembered by us fondly. Joan , Dave and Family

Elisa, I have good memories of you and your family growing up together. A picture of our first communion I still have. Building a box city in Mr.Maquillen's back yard,the tree fort,and the big bus. Mom and I send our LOVE.

John: I wanted to tell you that my very best condolences go out to you. Elisa often told me how fortunate she was to have you. She said you were such a good husband, but moreover, a good buddy! When I would remark to her about her courage and grace, you would tell me how courageous and kind YOU were. I, too (last note) told her I felt she was a hero to me, and again (as the last note says, too) she turned it back, saying you were such a hero to her. May God bless Elisa, and you, John, as well. I knew Elisa my entire life. She was always quick to make a joke and always had a smile. My happiest memory I will have of Elisa was that she was able to attend my wedding this past year as Annette's date. She will never know how much that meant to me. Elisa, you will be missed.

I have know Elisa since she was a small girl. I use to babysit her and her brothers and sisters. My heart is greatly sadden but I know that Elisa lived life to the fullest and is now no longer in pain. I will always remember her beautiful smile and her optimistic outlook on life. I was lucky enough to get to know Elisa only toward the end of her brief life. But, boy, what a life she lived, filled with so much energy, giving and caring for others. She always turned the conversation back to me and asked how I was doing and feeling. She never wanted anyone to feel sorry for her. Toward the end, I emailed her and told her she was my hero and she thanked me. But that is the truth, she really is my hero and I'm so grateful I was able to get to know her.

Elisa: i will miss you so much. I am a more joyful person having know you the last 25 yrs. I am so grateful that I kept in touch with you even after I had moved to NC, b/c you taught me courage and grace, which helped me so much in the difficult transition of my move. I will also always remember "back in the day" the Friday afternoon hair braiding sessions you did at "Elisa's Salon & Wisdom Parlor" - our own private "cut up" Club. I love you, Elisa. Dear John,

First and foremost my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I was blessed to know Elisa for a short time. Unfortunately, I came to know her under the worst circumstances..at Dr.Krebs office. I saw Elisa with hair(of various colors), without hair, through good days and bad, but the one thing that remained constant through out was her ability to flash that beautiful smile! Even on the worst of days she could light up a room with her smile.

She taught me much about life and the human spirit. I will be forever changed by knowing her. She touched so many in her life and I am lucky to be counted among them. She was a beautiful person and will be missed by all of us.
