Frances Dunphy Obituary

Frances Patricia Geoghegan Dunphy, 82, a devoted mother, grandmother, nurse, and beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia, after a long illness.
Born in Washington, DC, and raised in Alexandria, Virginia, Fran was the daughter of Mary Geoghegan and the late Francis Geoghegan. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1961 and began her career at the National Wildlife Federation. After traveling through Europe, she pursued nursing, earning her degree from Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing in 1971.
Fran spent much of her career in hospice care in the Washington, DC area, where her compassion and dedication made a lasting impact. Her work reflected her deep Catholic faith and commitment to others.
She married Gerard Dunphy, a Capitol Hill real estate professional, and together they raised three sons—Philip, Brendan, and Colin. Though later divorced, they remained dedicated co-parents. Gerard passed away in 2017. The family was known for their joyful St. Patrick's Day celebrations, honoring Fran's Irish heritage and love of community.
A longtime parishioner at St. Peter's Church and later Annunciation Church, Fran was active in parish life and an advocate for women's roles in the Church. An avid reader, she especially admired the works of Joseph Campbell and gardening columnist Henry Mitchell. She loved cooking and, after moving to Atlanta in 2015, cherished time spent with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her sons; daughters-in-law, Alejandra and Tina; grandchildren, Brianne, Camille, Patrick, and Mia; and siblings, Michael, John, Patrick, Kathleen, Mary Ellen, and Anne.
Fran will be remembered for her strength, faith, and generous spirit.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at St. Peter's Church on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.
