FRANK MIELE Obituary

FRANK NICHOLAS MIELE
Born in Brooklyn, NY on October 8, 1932. He passed away peacefully on August 8, 2016 at the Veteran''s Hospital in Washington, DC with his son at his side.He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict as a 2nd Lieutenant.Frank Miele initiated, maintained and established Oyster Bilingual Elementary Public School as a model school for bilingual education in Washington, DC and the rest of the United States. At Oyster, both English and Spanish were taught by using a Spanish and English teacher in each classroom. He created an inclusive atmosphere at the school where all students were welcomed regardless of class, race or language. One of Mr. Miele''s biggest thrills as an educator was when a Vietnamese student won the Spanish Spelling Bee proving that even students who didn''t speak English or Spanish very well could become trilingual. Through Oyster School, Frank Miele created a voice and status that the Hispanic community did not have at the time. Mr. Miele is survived by one son, a daughter-in-law, grandson and sister. He will forever be known as a visionary "El Visionario" and someone who always put his family and others first.Per his wishes, he will be cremated and the family will conduct a private service at a later date.

Frank Miele was a man of many talents and served our country in different ways. Frank served proudly during the Korean Conflict, with the United States Air Force as a lieutenant. Frank established a bilingual elementary school in NW, Washington DC, visited by former vice president Rosalynn Carter. Frank greatly trusted in higher education and influenced many young students to not give up on their education and to seek a higher ground, through advanced degrees. Frank served as a professor at the Montgomery college, teaching foreign students English as a second language and tutoring them in grammar, during his free time. Frank had a tremendous intellect, zest for life, sense of humor, and his own language. Most of all, Frank was a generous man, devoted to his son, daughter-in-law, and grandson. He is greatly missed.

Frank is a real father for all. I stayed in his house for 4 months as a foreign student. He was a father, a teacher, and a friend. He loved his son, daughter in law, and grandson Kevin a lot, and he daily talked proudly about them. Andrew, please keep in touch.

Andrew and family,
We just heard that Frank passed away. We had no idea until today! Frank was an awesome next door neighbor and a great man. His enthusiasm and wonderful smile will be missed in the neighborhood. We shared his love for classical music, opera and figs! Perhaps our fondest memories are of him driving into his driveway with the music turned all the way up and sometimes even singing along. We will miss that. Take care and please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you. We are right next door at 1920. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Tonight we will have a toast in honor of Frank. -- Pam and Paul Kaplan.

I went to Oyster Bilingual school back in the late 70s, when he was the principal then, and Ill always remember his kindness to me as a newly arrived immigrant kid. May he rest in peace.

Frank is the reason I have taught at Oyster Bilingual for almost 40 years. A man of vision who set a path for a unique school.
He will be missed.
