Frank Olver was a giant in classical mathematical analysis. His 1974 monograph Asymptotics and Special Functions has become a classic. More recently he devoted himself completely to the 2010 NIST Handbook of Mathematical Functions, a monumental achievement that will be an indispensable mathematics reference for for scientists and engineers for many years to come. Frank's influence on my own academic development and professional career has been profound. His loss is felt deeply by the entire applied mathematics community.
Prof. Olver was Editor-in-Chief and author of several chapters in the 2010 NIST Handbook of Mathematical Functions, successor to the 1964 Handbook.
