Frederick Seelman Obituary

Frederick George Seelman, Jr. known fondly as "Fred", passed away on September 24, 2025, at the age of 88 in Olney, Maryland. A man of boundless curiosity and conviction, Fred led a richly layered life as a civil servant, attorney, public defender, political organizer, writer, dancer, and world traveler. He visited over 100 countries, taught himself languages and ballroom dance, and remained intellectually and civically engaged into his 80s. Born in Watertown, Massachusetts, Fred was a proud graduate of the University of Maryland and its School of Law. He served in both the Maryland and North Carolina National Guards, later becoming a nationally recognized expert in employment law. In retirement, he remained active in veteran and senior organizations and led the Leisure World Republican Club. Fred is survived by his sons Michael and Scott, sisters Katherine and Marilyn, four beloved grandchildren, and close companion Irmgard Patrick. A memorial will be held Tuesday, October 7, at Our Lady of Grace Church in Leisure World. Fred will be remembered for his booming laugh, fierce intelligence, handwritten notes, deep convictions, and his joy in life, movement, and meaningful conversation.
