ELMS, HARRY D. "MAJOR", SR. (Age 81)
Of Triangle, VA, died on Monday, August 26, 2002 at Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, VA.He served 20 years in the United States Marine Corps, of which 13 years was at the Marine Corps Headquarters as Executive Secretary of the Marine Corps Uniform Board. During his service under Commandant General Lemuel Shepherd, he was responsible for the design of the Marine Corps Seal, approved by President Eisenhower in 1954. He was an authority on Marine Corps uniforms and insignia, and advised the 20th through 32nd Commandants of the Marine Corps on uniform matters. After retirement in 1961, he founded and later became President of "The Marine Shop", a Marine Corps uniform shop in Quantico, Virginia "Serving Marines Around The World". The Major was associated with the Marine Corps Association, The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, and The Marine Corps University Foundation. He was also an active member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish and was a past Operations Manager of the Church and School. He is survived by his former wife, Elaine, and his children Pamela Elms of Woodbridge, David Elms and Stephen Elms, both of Stafford, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at Saint Francis of Assisi Church, Triangle, VA at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 5, 2002 with burial immediately following at the Quantico National Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 4, 2002 from 7 to 9 p.m. at MULLINS & THOMPSON FUNERAL SERVICE, Stafford Chapel. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of a memorial contribution to any of these three organizations: St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 18825 Fuller Heights Road, Triangle, VA 22172; Marine Corps University Foundation, P.O. Box 122, Quantico, VA 22134; or Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, P.O. Box 3008, Princeton, NJ 08543.

I bought my officer´s uniforms from Harry when I was first commissioned in 1968 and for several years thereafter. He was a consummate officer, gentleman and friend and counselor to many Marines over many years. RIP, Major.
