From Ross Lewis, East Brunswick, NJ....former 1Lt. 127th Signal Bn., Camp Casey, Korea. Served under Col. Federhen during 1967/68.
Dear Family of Col. Federhen,
I am very sad for the loss of your Husband and Dad. I proudly served with him in Korea as a platoon leader in the 127th Sig. Bn. A remarkable, unforgettable experience happened with me and Col. Federhen in February, 1968 just prior to my rotating back to the U.S. I was strongly recommended to Col. Federhen by two West Point officers to be promoted to Company Commander at that time and to stay in Korea for the remainder of my Army tour of duty.
Although I declined the offer (I was very anxious to return home), I have never forgotten that moment and the meeting we had with all four of us to discuss the possibility of staying in the 127th. What struck me the most was that I had a "style" of commanding which was often creative and "not by the book". Although it was effective I often thought that Col. Federhen did not like that style. Perhaps those thoughts were only in my own mind. Yet, here I was, on that February, 1968 day with Col. Federhen who made a serious gesture to offer me a leadership position to be a Company Commander as a First Lieutenant. I can tell you that, to this day, I have held that moment as one of the most honorable and cherished moments of my life and I truly thank your father, forever, for having a powerful and gracious impact upon my life. I left Korea feeling that I had made a difference and was a success at my job.
As an offer to you: I have several photographs of Col. Federhen from that period of time. Please let me know how I may contact you in order for me to send you these photos.
Thank you,
Ross Lewis
