Herbert Weinstein

Herbert Weinstein, retired professor of chemical engineering.

Herbert Weinstein was born in Brooklyn, NY on Friday, March 10, 1933 to Pauline (nee Feldman) and Abraham Weinstein. He died on the morning of Thursday, April 28, 2022 of heart failure. Herb graduated Brooklyn Tech High School at the age of 17 and obtained his bachelor's degree from City College of New York in 1955. While pursuing his master's degree at Purdue, he met and fell in love with Judith Cooper from Chicago. He left Lafayette, IN to work at Los Alamos laboratories in New Mexico. Judy joined him there after they were married in 1957. Herb and Judy left Los Alamos for Cleveland in 1958, where he went to work for NASA and simultaneously worked on his PhD at Case Western Reserve University. By the time he was awarded his degree in 1962, the couple had two sons. The family moved to Chicago to be close to Judy's family and Herb took his first faculty job at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he began his successful career as a research engineer and dedicated teacher and mentor and their daughter was born. As a professor, he formally mentored many PhD and master's students and advised and guided countless other graduate and undergraduate students. His research career spanned more than four decades and encompassed multiple fields, including nuclear rocket engine design, major league baseball cheating, biomedical engineering, and fluidized bed design. He shared his expertise and multiple patents in the last field with Exxon's research division. In 1977, the family moved to Teaneck, NJ when Herb took a faculty position at his alma mater, City College of New York, and at the City University of New York, where he was granted an endowed chair. His dedication to teaching and mentorship was not confined to the education of college and graduate students; his children and their friends benefitted mightily from his wisdom. He retired in 2004 to spend more time with Judy and enjoy international travel together.

In addition to being dedicated to his career, Herb was an attentive and wise father, husband and a doting grandfather to whom nothing was more important than family. His beloved wife Judith preceded him in death in 2017, as did his older brother Albert, who passed away in 2007. He is survived by his much much younger sister, Sheila Fleischer, son Michael, son Edward (Rivka) Weinstein, and daughter Ellen (David) Kaminow, as well as his eight grandchildren: Benjamin, Matthew, Austin, Abraham, Elijah, Lily, Aviva and Daniel. He will be sorely missed by his immediate family, cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends who all loved him dearly. Funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 1, 2022, 12:30 p.m. at Judean Chapel, 16225 Batchellors Forest Road, Olney, MD 20832 with interment to follow at Judean Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Technion Society (ats.org). Services entrusted to Sagel Bloomfield Danzansky Goldberg Funeral Care.

It is with deep sadness I learned of the passing of Professor Herbert Weinstein. When I was an undergraduate student at City College of New York many years ago, Professor Weinstein taught me Unit Operations. I feel blessed for having been taught by an excellent professor. I learned a lot from this exceptional teacher and mentor. In addition to his excellent teaching skills, Professor Weinstein was also a wonderful person, a truly good human being. May his memory be a blessing.
