I trained with Katie in Howard's laboratory from 2008 to 2009 as a post-bac fellow, and echo all of her sentiments. Howard was my first boss out of college and working in the lab was quite an experience for a pre-med sociology major. When I began working in the lab, my basic science knowledge was largely lacking. Howard encouraged me to learn as much as I could during the year I spent at the NIH and always made sure I had a good understanding of my projects. Howard's confidence that I could master the material inspired me to work harder. Aside from my parents, I don't think anyone has ever believed in me as much as Howard did, and for that I will always be grateful.
I now live in Chicago, which I remember is one of Howard's favorite places. He would occasionally walk to work during the colder days in DC and I would ask him why he would pick these days to walk to work. He would reply that it reminded him of his days in Chicago. Now, whenever it is really cold outside and I have to walk somewhere, I remember how it used to bring a smile to Howard's face (so I tough it out).
I also remember that Howard spoke fondly of his grandchildren, his wife and her artwork, and his daughters and son-in-laws. My thoughts go out to Howard's family and friends.

I trained in Howard's laboratory in 2007-2008 as a recent college graduate. While "passing flies," Howard shared his knowledge and experience, imparting his fascination for science and the arts. Howard was a warm, insightful, challenging PI (principal investigator) and mentor. He led me through scientific reasoning, experimental struggles and the existential decision-making process of picking a career path. Howard saw people as a whole, as scientists and as human beings. I feel fortunate to have spent one year working in Howard’s lab, and I would not be where I am right now if not for Howard. I offer my deep condolences to his family.

My condolences and prayers are with the Nash family during this difficult time. I worked with Howard for about 5 years in LMB. He was a dedicated scientist with a giant presence, but a very kind and caring person. He will truly be missed.

Howard is an inspiration to me. I spent 4 years (1999 - 2003) in the lab where Howard is the chief. He sets up a good example for me. He is a dedicated scientist, always enjoys seeking the truth, and has no fear to face the unknown. It was very sad that I did not have a last chance to say "thank you" to him. My condolences and thoughts are with the Nash family.

Our thoughts and most sincere sympathies are with you at this time as you celebrate your father's life. Although we never had the pleasure to meet him personaly, we know what a significant impact he had on your lives as a father and grandfather from Janet's sharing of his life and his contributions to his field.

I was surprised and saddened to learn about the passing of Howard Nash. I worked closely with Howard for 10 years (1972-82) and he endeared himself to me during that time. Rough on the outside, but a kind and caring individual on the inside. I have fond memories of the beautiful quilted pockets that Dominie would sew on the sweatshirts he always wore. He was a friend and advocate during the time we worked together and I’m very sorry to hear that he’s gone.

Very sad to hear the news. I learned so much directly from him and indirectly from him through his example. I know I am not the only one that feels this way. His impact will continue through those who he helped and provided an example for.
