I had the great honor and good fortune to be one of Bill's many students sent to him by the military, in my case the Air Force, to work on a PhD. He was my mentor and later friend and he never stopped sending me useful suggestions and idea. He was pleased that after retirement I moved to the faculty at the National Defense University, putting into practice the lessons and philosophy I learned from him The Air Force has lost one of its intellectual giants, and anyone involved with Air Force history and doctrine has lost a guiding light.
