James Graham Obituary

JAMES GRAHAM (Age 79)
Alexandria restaurateur, died peacefully on January 10, 2011, of natural causes. He was co-owner and proprietor of Scotland Yard Restaurant in Old Town Alexandria from 1978 to 2004. He was a fixture in Old Town, standing outside his restaurant for twenty-five years, outfitted in his full dress Scottish regalia. James emigrated from Scotland in 1967, having been granted a special Visa based on his background as a well-known Scottish ballroom dancer acclaimed internationally. James worked in the dance world for many years, and then turned to his more artistic pursuits. He was an artist in all respects. He was a renowned oil painter, an expert in faux facades, and a builder and renovator of historic properties in Alexandria. In 1978, James and his business partner, Susan Troup, created Scotland Yard Restaurant, with family recipes from Scotland, as well as modern interpretations of Scottish fare. He is survived by his son, Stuart Graham, nine brothers and sisters, as well as Susan Troup, Lelia Troup Beall and Waldon Wayne Beall. A memorial tribute is scheduled for Sunday, February 6. Friends who wish to attend should call the family at 703-836-3773. Memorial contributions should be made to the Animal Rescue League of Alexandria, 4101 Eisenhower Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22304

James was a friend and inspiration - his wisdom and encouragement I will always treasure. He was in the midst of teaching me faux painting techniques and advised me on a mural I was commissioned last year. God willing I hope to complete some of the projects we discussed if I am able. May God bless your spirit - you will certainly be always remembered.

If there is any other gathering in honor of James I would love to know since I did not find out about his memorial in time.

James wasn't just a business acquaintance, but was a friend to my family. My dad would talk business with him a lot. We would go to his restaurant and have a great time with him and Susan. He will surly be missed. My family made a contribution to The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria in memory of James.
