James O'Leary Obituary

On August 2, 2024, Jay died peacefully at home in Annapolis, Maryland with his loving wife at his side, having fought a valiant 4-year battle with cancer. He is survived by wife Kathleen McGlaughlin, and siblings William, Jr. (Jacki), Patrick (Molly), Kathleen (Hal Bloom), Ellen (Andreas Wilkinson), and Jane (Jon Ruckdeschel).

Second son of William P. and Sarah M. O'Leary, Jay was a standout in sports at Good Counsel High School in Wheaton, Maryland, then a fine-arts student at the University of Maryland, College Park, earning a degree in 1979. Jay loved working for NASA, where he was as a graphic designer from 1986-2024. Over almost 40 years at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD, Jay impressed colleagues with his brilliant creativity, infectious enthusiasm, deep kindness, amazing smile, and ability to light up the day of anyone fortunate enough to interact with him.

In his private life, Jay was an amazing artist and creative spirit, who never stopped making homemade gifts of stunning artwork and craftsmanship. In 2008, Kathleen said yes to lunch with him, and they have been together ever since. He and Kathleen loved traveling–there was never a time when they weren't planning their next adventure, and the next meal to go with it. They finally tied the knot in 2023, but were married in their hearts from day one. He loved his big family, often referring to his dad and mom as best friends. Second of six, Jay cherished his time growing up with his siblings in Adelphi, MD and the many adventures they had as a family. Anyone who knew Jay knew that he also loved golf, which he began playing with his father as his partner in the Goddard Golf League. Jay will be remembered always for his genuine smile, warmth and kindness, willingness to help others, and a rare ability to lift the moods of others with his presence. Oh, and for his love of a good beer (or two).

A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends on September 21, 3 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cancer Research Institute (www.cancerresearch.org). And in the spirit of Jay, perhaps raise a glass in his honor tonight. Slàinte.

Jay-Bird,
We had so many goofy and fun times during our long stint at Goddard... so many that it would take pages and pages listing them all. When Deb, you, and me were housed in the Bldg 8 basement "fish bowl", we always had such a blast. It is a wonder we got any work done. In turn, we all became great friends that continued for many, many years. You were like my fifth brother. Your hilarious wit and creative soul will be sorely missed. God love ya, Jay. Slam Bang, kiddo.

Jay was such a kind-hearted person. I could always count on him when I needed a caricature done for an upcoming retirement. All he ever asked for was a 6-pack of whatever he was drinking at the time. My favorite caricature was one he did for my Aunt's 70th birthday. I wanted to commemorate her and my Mother's love for thrift store shopping and boy did he come up with something awesome! Jay will be truly missed. Love to the family. Katie Poole

Jay and I attended St. Camillus grade school, Good Counsel High School and the University of Maryland together. What a great guy, athlete, artist and friend. His spot-on caricatures of our teachers and friends made me laugh endlessly. He's gone way too soon. RIP Jay.

Jay has been a work colleague since I cam ro Goddard in 1992. His dry and sometimes deadpan humor mad him stand out. He was a trusted friend and always made sure he could come through with the results we needed. He is gone way too some and we miss him here.

Losing a loved one is painful beyond reason, but it's the memories we keep alive and cherish in our hearts that make it less painful to move forward. May his legacy live on in each of us and set examples for this generation and the next to smile more, spread warmth and kindness, help those in need, and be a circle of positivity to lift the spirits of those around us. Rest in Peace, Jay.
