James Schnabel Obituary

James Joseph Schnabel, Sr., founder of a pioneering geotechnical engineering firm and a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in Annapolis on July 3, 2025. He was 95.
A longtime resident of Chevy Chase and Sherwood Forest, Maryland, Jim, was born on February 18, 1930, in Washington, DC, to Marion (Robb) and Harry Schnabel. He graduated with his Civil Engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1952 and proudly served as an officer in the Navy Civil Engineering Corps before launching his professional career.
In 1956, Jim founded Schnabel Engineering Associates, a geotechnical engineering consulting firm in Washington, DC. The company grew into a nationally respected firm, while Jim was at the helm, and now employs over 550 employee owners and offers a wide array of engineering services with a global reach.
After retiring from Schnabel Engineering, Jim served for many years on the board of International Christian Concern. Through his time with ICC, he traveled and met with persecuted churches and pastors around the world.
Jim and his beloved wife, Joan—his partner in life—shared a deep dedication to community service and were active in many other religious and charitable organizations across the capital region and the world. Joan passed away in 2023 after a lifetime of shared purpose and love.
Beyond work, Jim could be found playing tennis and golf and would find time to sail on the Severn River with Joan and the kids. Jim was known for his dedicated faith, family devotion, and quiet wisdom.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Harry and Robert, and is survived by his children, James Jr., Brian, Eileen (Chad), and John (Kasy), as well as his six grandchildren: Courtney, David, Kane, Caden, Declan, and Keller.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Bay Area Community Church, Annapolis, MD, on August 16 at 3 p.m.

I write with the most sincere condolences. Our families go way back in Sherwood. Your Dad was so kind, so generous, so gentle and loving.
I loved meeting up with your parents while walking along Beach Road.
They always about my parents and then Mom. And his smile !
Peaceful days as you continue to grieve. Catherine May Gonzalez

I got to meet Jim at his home in Chevy Chase in the mid-1980's, while we worked together with a non-profit entity based in Annapolis MD. He was very welcoming and kind to me. My sincere condolences to the family.
