JERRY WOLMAN Obituary

WOLMAN JERRY WOLMAN Jerry Wolman, 87, died Tuesday, August 6, 2013, surrounded by family at his home in Potomac, Maryland. Beloved husband to Bobbie Wolman, father to Helene (Leonard) Sacks and Alan (Michelle) Wolman, grandfather to Adam Sacks, Robyn Sacks Matthews (Derek Matthews), Julie Wolman Freed (Jared Freed), Brian Wolman, Danny (Justine) Wolman, Andie Wolman and Michael Wolman and brother to Sandra Teplin and Manny Wolman. Born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, Jerry cherished his roots as a son of the coal-region. He had a tremendous passion for football, and as a child would hitchhike 100 miles without a ticket and sneak in to see the Philadelphia Eagles play. After serving in the Merchant Marines as a teenager, he returned home and met his wife-to-be, Anne (now deceased). Penniless, but determined, the two decided to pick-up a hitchhiker and go wherever their passenger was heading to start their new life: it turned out to be Washington, DC. There, Jerry started his career as a builder and in no time went on to develop more than 30,000 apartment units and more than 6 million square feet of office space. He was the managing owner of the famed National Theatre and at the request of President Kennedy personally, he owned and developed the first building to be built under the President's plan for the "Beautification of Pennsylvania Avenue". In 1963, he achieved his childhood dream and purchased the Philadelphia Eagles, making him the youngest owner in the National Football League. He also aided in the development of NFL Films. Shortly after, he built the Spectrum Arena and became the founding owner of The Philadelphia Flyers Hockey Club. In 1964, he began plans for the construction of the world's tallest building: The John Hancock Center in Chicago, where he met his current wife, Bobbie. Wolman's accomplishments were only surpassed by the manner in which he lived his life. His generous deeds for friends and strangers alike became legendary. He was an extraordinary man, who will be greatly missed. Services will be held on Thursday, August 8th at 1 p.m. at: Tifereth Israel Congregation 7701 16th Street, NW Washington, DC Shiva will be held on Thursday evening at the home of Helene and Leonard Sacks. Memorial donations may be made to: The Miracle League Association 1506 Klondike Road - Suite 105 Conyers, GA 30094

Jerry, I am thankful that you ended up at One Central Plaza. Every single interaction with you left me and my co-workers entertained, energized and encouraged. You were selflessly generous. Though we had limited direct interation with your family, we saw how you loved Robin dearly and wanted to meet her baby. We watch you leave the property each midday to take your beloved wife lunch. You reminded me of my father - also a charming man who loved to laugh and valued his family. I admire that you so loved your life that you decided to fight to stay with us. How I wish you had succeeded... In your honor, we will try to adapt all that we admired in you. We're forever positively changed as result of you. For that, we thank you...

Many precious memories flood thru our minds. The most recent was after reading his book. I called him and we talked, not about the book but his family and grandchildren . How he loved to visit on weekends. His family is his greatest joy. We pray that you remember his love and devotion. Opal and Jimmie Mitchell

Alan & Helene: Such lovely memories of your parents when we were children in the neighborhood -- especially your father's smile and laughter and exuberance as we piled in the car to go to Hot Shoppes after a neighborhood baseball game. He was a joy to know and you are lucky to have had his heart. With great fondness, Lonnie (Wilets) Klein

This hardly seems possible. Jerry must have been the most alive person I have ever met. That house had 2 flights of stairs. The way he went up and down, you'd think he was crashing through the other team's line, going for the touchdown, dancing in the end zone! And the crowd goes wild!

My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Jerry Wolman.

I was lucky to know him, and his gift of laughter and beautiful smile comforted me many hours at the Hebrew Home while we sat together at my mother's bedside and with my Aunt Sue.

Jerry was also there for me when I was diagnosed with cancer, and found a way to make me smile.

Rest in Peace Jerry.
Thank you.
love,
Doreen
