JOHN CALLAGHAN Obituary

CALLAGHAN JOHN W. CALLAGHAN John W. Callaghan passed away on February 6, 2015 at The Johnson Center, Falcons Landing. He can best be described as a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, husband and friend to all and a dedicated soldier. His later years were spent as a true asset to Falcons Landing residents, where he and Dooley, his wife of nearly 65 years, resided for the past 18 years. John was born July 10, 1924 in Lawrence Massachusetts. John began his college matriculation at Dartmouth entering in 1941. After two years at Dartmouth, John received and accepted an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point graduating with the Class of 1946. John embarked on a distinguished career in the Army over the next 30 years. COL Callaghan held command and Army/Joint Staff assignments in the U.S., Japan, Germany, Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam during the height of the Cold War. His assignment highlights included command of the 1st Battalion, 12 Infantry Regiment at Fort Lewis and a tour of duty In Viet Nam he was the Senior Advisor for the 22nd ARVN Division and engaged in combined operations with the 1st Cavalry Division. In Heidelberg Germany from 1970-1974, he was the Chief of Staff, USAREUR Combat Support Command and the Deputy Heidelberg Region Community Commander. He retired in 1976 culminating his loyal service to the nation as the G-1, Army Materiel Command, retiring in 1976. John W. Callaghan is survived by his loving wife Virginia (Dooley) Timberman Callaghan, his adoring children Lucy Catherine Callaghan, MAJ (ret) John William Callaghan JR and Elizabeth Brooks Callaghan, Grandchildren: CPT John W. Callaghan III, 1LT Maxwell Perez, Virginia Keyes Callaghan Harrison, Cecily Sonja Perez, Samuel Brooks Callaghan and two great-grandchildren. Family will receive friends on Thursday, February 12, 2015 between 6 and 8 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd NE, Leesburg, VA 20176. A mass will take place 2 p.m. on Friday, February 13, 2015 at Falcon's Landing, Potomac Falls, VA 20165. www.colonialfuneralhome.com

Death was not God's original purpose for us, it is something for which we can never be completely prepared. The Bible says: Time indefinite God has put in our hearts (Ecclesiastes3:11). God created us with the desire to live forever. He has opened the way for that desire to be fulfilled at John 3:16.
