JOSEPH BARR Obituary
DR. JOSEPH BARR
Dr. Joseph Barr departed his earthly life for his heavenly reward on Friday, July 11, 2014. Doc was a graduate of Tuskegee Institute School of Veterinary Medicine, class of 1950. As proprietor of Jo-Rett Veterinary Clinic in Fairmont Heights, MD he serviced his community for almost 60 years. Doc was the first African American veterinarian in the Metropolitan area who serviced southern Maryland, Prince George's and Montgomery counties. He was a charter member of the D.C. Academy of Veterinary Medicine. While a student at Tuskegee he was instrumental in bringing Omega Psi Phi Fraternity to the campus and became a member in 1946. As an avid boater he and his wife Doretta took many cruises on their yatch The Do- Jo Too and were members of the Sea Farers Yatch Club in Annapolis, Maryland for many years. Dr. Barr is survived by his loving wife, Doretta Peaks Barr; devoted grandsons, Myron and Stacey (Tia); great-grands, Malik and Celeste Barr, many family and friends. A celebration of his life is Saturday, July 26, 2014; viewing 10 a.m., services 11 a.m. at The Episcopal Church of the Atonement, 5073 East Capital St., SE, Washington DC 20019, The Rev. H. To the Barr Family,
Joe and I were friends, classmates, and frat brothers at Tuskegee, and kept in touch periodically. We just spent time together at the Omega's 100th anniversary in DC. And, my family and I have spent time with him and his wife on the Do-Jo II. We have many happy memories, and that you will not be forgotten. Please know that you have my sincerest sympathy. RIP Joe....

I was honored twice over the past two years to have met Dr. / Brother Barr and dined with him at a local eatery. I was tasked to provide Dr. Barr with transportation during the Omega Centennial celebration.
