Dear Vaghi Family,
Joe was my dad´s (Ahmed Youssef) best professional and personal friend. They were a great team, admired each other so much, shared stories, and loved each others families as if it was theirs. I also admired and respected Joe for his design sense and inspiration. He is forever missed.
Much love, Sandy Youssef Clinton

after reading the kind words upon the passing of Joe, I too have always been struck by his demeanor when in his company. He had that rare gift of making everyone feel special and the total focus of his attention.. he remained until his last days a vital member of our family. Although there was a major difference in the ages ..he related to the younger generation of grandnephews and neices ,along with their parents,in pertinent topics of conversation. He remained a joy to be near. Rest in peace ,Joe...you were a wonderful example of grace, kindness, and love to all.your sister-in-law, May Vaghi, Alfred's loving widow.

When Great men leave us for a better place, how can you not feel sad?
But when you realize that every memory of that man is a good one, you must truly feel good about his life and the man he was. He was very proud of his loving family and rightly should be. He will be missed but I for one will be greatly honored that I knew him and learned from him. He has certainly earned his blessings.

I did not know Mr. Vaghi. I met him through the television series, The War. He emitted compassion, resilience, toughness and love. I was especially touched by his comments about his family. He was obviously a loving son and brother. Such a spirit of humanity that did not appear diminished by the face to face encounter he had with the carnage of the war. I, a stranger, learned about uncommon acts of herorism and bravery from Mr. Vaghi. I thank God for sharing him with us and pray that he is now at peace. I pray for peace and comfort for his family and wish you God's blessings.

Dear Peter, Vince, Nino, and Joe,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families in the mourning of your father. Joe Vaghi was a household name in the Youssef family in Kensington. My father, Ahmed, considered Joe one of his closest friends and work associates. I know of many projects on which they collaborated over the years, and I overheard their belly laughs over stories they shared.
Additionally, your dad helped me launch into my own profession by connecting me with my future boss at NIH. I owe him a world of gratitude for his good word and his trust in me.
The last I spoke with Joe was soon after my own father's death in 2005. I wanted to tell him directly and share the love my father and I had of this great and gentle man. He remained so gracious, generous and loving in that conversation. I'm only sorry I didn't see or speak with him since then, though his name continues to come up in conversation in my own home.
I will always carry a special place in my heart and thoughts for your dad (and mom).
Much love, Sandy Youssef Clinton

To the Vaghi boys and famlies:
The image of your follks and their strong family values will forever stay with me. Your dad's constant smile, his kind and generous words for everyone he met, his intellectual engagement...those are the things that I will remember, along with that handsome face. I have always held a soft spot for them both and I say a prayer in rememberance of Joe. Thinking of you during this difficult time.
With love,

Joseph Vaghi was a good, holy and honorable man. He was faithful to his Catholic faith and to his Italian heritage. My favorite memories of Joe and Agnes are of the John Carroll Society pilgrimages in Europe and the NIAF luncheons in DC. They were always pleasant and kind to everyone and a pleasure to be with. As Joe was a World War II veteran I enjoyed listening to his stories about his war time experiences. Losing my Uncle Frank in Anzio, Italy in the War, I appreciated all that Joe would tell me about it.
My prayers are for Joe Vaghi and for all the Vaghi family at this time as it is a great loss for them to lose a devoted father.
May God have mercy on his soul.

Peter, Vincent, Nino & Joe,
Your father was an extraordinary man... by any measure!
He was so vibrant and dynamic; so kind and honorable; and so very much fun! It was always an absolute pleasure to be in his company.
I have many treasured memories of him, but perhaps the most vivid are from those wonderful days nearly 30 years ago when we were all together in Rome at the time of Peter's ordination as Deacon. He and your mother were so filled with pride and saw to it that we all had a magnificent celebration. I can still see the smile he wore on his face throughout the trip.
Although I'd had the pleasure of seeing your father on many occasions I'd had no knowledge whatsoever of his exploits on Omaha Beach until I stumbled across the interview with him on the PBS special 'The War'. Such was his modesty.
He loved your mother and he loved you guys -- no doubt about it. It was written all over his face, and was so evident in his every word and deed. He was a proud and happy man.
May he rest in peace.

Dear Msgr.Peter, Dr.Vincent, Nino and Joseph,
No words of mine can mean much now. Your loss is far too great and much too close. But for our Dominican Community at Providence College, in behalf of our alumni and alumnae, and in my own name, we want to make known to you, and to your family, our deepest sympathy. At Mass, in prayer, your father is with us...so are you!
At a time such as this, nothing anyone says makes much sense. (Perhaps better than most, I know that.) But it is my hope that the consoling thought of a gifted Trappist monk might help.
Thomas Merton wrote, death is where the hills end, and the stars begin.
Joseph's "hills" are over now. It's his time to be with the "stars" and their Source. I pray that the deep, inner Peace that thought can induce, will be with you and your family...especially now.
May Mary, the temple in whom God's Son became a priest, keep you near, in her care.
With His Love and all mine,
National Chaplain

In our liftimes, we sometimes have the privledge to meet a special person. Joe Vaghi was a special person. I visited Omaha beach last year and my first thoughts were of Joe. I knew him for 30 years and enjoyed knowing Agnes and watching them rear a wonderful family. He lives on in his boys and grandchildens hearts and I will always be thankful that I knew Joe.

It is with deep sadness that I learn of Joe's passing. He was a very nice man, and played an important role in helping to preserve the history of the Navy Beach Battalions. He will be missed. I hope his family is comforted by the fact that h had a long and interesting life.

LCDR Joe Vaghi USNR (Ret) & the other men of his 6th Naval Beach Battalion will continue to be honoured & remembered by all of us who know their heroic contributions to the success of the Allied invasion of "Fortress Europe," at the bluffs of Normandy's Omaha Beach, on 06 June, 1944. As "Saving Private Ryan's" fictional Captain Gordon had requested of his beneficiary, LCDR Vaghi lived a good & exemplary life---worthy of emulation. I am happy to know that he finally received the French Legion of Honor, whose delay so concerned Dr. Dick Borden, before his journey home. May God bless him. Thank you, Joe.

My heart is heavy with this sad news. From the moment I first spoke with Ensign Vaghi, Vogi as he was affectionately known by his platoon-mate, Amin Isbir, I was captivated by his manner and patience with someone as un-knowledgeable as me, especially concerning the utmost travesties of life.
Ensign Vaghi, (Lt. Cmdr.) was that guiding light to the truth which was the beginning of my own "great crusade". How fortunate we all are that such men lived... Such men like Joe who guided his men though the horrors of war with steadfast leadership.
Rest now my friend, rest within the light of the Lord... Your work here is finished, yet your legacy will live on for generations to come. Bless you and that of your family that they may find peace in knowing you will always be watching over us.
