Dr. Leo Hans von Euler  
Leo Hans von Euler, a pathologist and former deputy director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), died on December 17, 2020, at Brooke Grove Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Sandy Spring, Maryland, of illness related to COVID-19. Dr. von Euler was born on January 31, 1931, in Stockholm, Sweden, to Ulf Svante von Euler-Chelpin and Jane Sodenstierna von Euler, and was educated at Norra Latin. After immigrating to the United States by himself in January 1949, he attended Williams College under the Bowdoin Plan for foreign students and graduated in 1952. While serving in the United States Army in Japan, he became an American citizen in 1954. He received his MD degree from the Yale School of Medicine in 1959, awarded the Winternitz prize in Pathology. After his retirement from NIH and the United States Public Health Service in 1987, he pursued his other passions in music, family history, and broad reading in both English and Swedish. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Sanders von Euler of Chevy Chase, Maryland, a sister, Ursula Sj��berg of Odenslunda, Sweden, a sister, Marie John of Melbourne, Australia, a daughter, Barbara von Euler (Mason Hogan), of Raleigh, North Carolina, a son, Peter Michael von Euler (Nancy), of Southport, Connecticut, and three grandchildren, Malin von Euler-Hogan (John Purcell), Natanael von Euler-Hogan (Isabelle Phelps), and Sarah von Euler. A granddaughter, Emma Jane von Euler, predeceased him. Contributions in his memory may be made to Physicians for a National Health Program, 29 E.
