LOUIS SHARP Obituary

SHARP LOUIS H. SHARP (Age 77) Founder, director, and coach for more than 40 years of the Competition Swim Clinic, died Friday, June 17, 2016 at his residence in Springfield, Virginia. Lou''s exceptional knowledge of physics and swim stroke mechanics, his work ethic of preparing a renowned strategy, and his love for youth and the sport resulted in the coveted program''s success. As one swimmer wrote on Lou''s Facebook page, "The values he instilled in me for swimming are life lessons that are still with me." Lou was born April 20, 1939, in Indianapolis, Indiana. A natural athlete, he excelled in track, earning the title of City Champion in the 440-yard event at Thomas Carr Howe Community High School, a school record that stood for several years. He swam for the Ellenburger City Park Youth Program and the Indianapolis Athletic Club, where he was an All-American in his age group and an Indiana state record holder. As a USA Masters swimmer, he won the East Coast 50-yard freestyle championship at Princeton University, was fourth in the nation in the 100 backstroke, and fifth in the 200 backstroke. His co-ed 200 freestyle relay team, for which he swam the anchor leg and included the late Betty Brae, set a Masters American record. He attended Indiana University, where he was on the winning team in the Little 500 Cycling Race in 1958. He later graduated from Baylor University with an MS in Astrophysics. He worked five years as a contract design engineer for NASA Goddard Space Craft Center and two years as a project manager for the development of ALSEP meteor sensors at Union Carbide/NASA. He co-authored the computer software "Swim Logic." He returned to the D.C. area where he retired as a department head after 21 years under Father Healy, SJ, and Charles Meng at Georgetown University. "Not quite as exciting as the space program," Lou quipped in a 2014 interview. In the early 1970s, Lou coached at the Brookville Swim Club in Alexandria. He drew on his expertise as a swimmer and his physics knowledge to teach other swimmers the most effective way to power through water. He never stopped researching and studying better and more effective stroke mechanics. While at Brookville, Lou started the Northern Virginia Swim Team (NVST) and the Competition Swim Clinic (CSC), most of whom participate in the Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL). His NVST swimmers frequently swept most of the medals in USS swim meets. Eventually, he devoted himself exclusively to the CSC, where he felt his time was best utilized instructing the yearly 200-400 swimmers who sought his training. He understood that an excellent swimmer must first learn the strokes properly before building up speed, and was firmly opposed to "superfluous lap training." Lou feasted on living. His interests included gardening, hunting, growing mushrooms, photography, nature, firearms, and teaching. His greatest joy was found in his friendships, of which there were many. He blessed others with acts of kindness and thoughtfulness, both large and small. He left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him, and his spirit will live on in the thousands of lives he touched. He will be deeply missed. His parents, Mary Kathryn and Louis Sharp, and a sister, Nancy, preceded Lou in death. A memorial will be held 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fairfax Rod and Gun Club or to the NVSL Lou Sharp Scholarship Fund, c/o Stephen Wallin, 5531 Hershey Lane, Alexandria, Va 22312. It's several months since Lou is no longer with us. We remember and miss him as a coach and a fair and honest person. Our daughter learned and got a lot during the two years that she was at CSC. And she received much more in terms of work ethics and attitude. Thank you!

Coach Lou loved his swimmers dearly.

It is almost a month since you left us! The June 26th visitation event I enjoyed a lot, and I was introduced to many of your friends from the swimming community. Over the past 3 weeks I'm missing our 10 - 11 AM mourning visits, and plans for getting together. Now, I sit with only the fond memories of the great times we spent in company for so many years. Judy, Patrick, and Crystal will always remember you, for your kindness and great sense of humor --- "Uncle Lou"! That GREAT SMILE!!!

Lou had a good soul and was a loyal friend to many. I always enjoyed joining him and Jeff over a meal and learning more from his wide ranging knowledge. He was a true renaissance man and was I was amazed at his horticulture skills and ability to share his knowledge with others. I will miss his enthusiasm for life and genuine loyalty to his friends. So saddened to hear of Lou's sudden passing. I was fortunate to meet Lou on occasion while visiting Alexandria, Virginia and always appreciated his extensive knowledge and intellect on any given topic. He was funny with a great sense of humor who could keep an engaging conversation going into the late hours of the evening where I would require a second or maybe a third cup of coffee just to keep up with him. But most importantly, he was a generous, caring, thoughtful and kindhearted man who took a sincere and genuine interest in others and will be greatly missed.

Our daughter learned so much from you in her years with CSC. So sorry our son hadn't quite made it to the "big pool" to benefit from your wisdom and guidance. Won't miss that harsh whistle during time trials when us parents were "talking too much", but l'll sure miss the weekly sight of you waiting at the counter at Wakefield, offering advice and encouragement as your "kids" streamed in and out. We'll miss you, Lou.

I met Lou Sharp at the Brookville Swim Club in the 1970s, and he would remain my closest friend for the next forty years. His enthusiasm for life, always positive outlook, and loyal support helped me through one of the darkest periods of my life, and today I'm not quite sure what I shall do without him. Often generous to a fault, his broad repertoire of expertise always made him a delight to be with. A true intellectual companion, his passion for a seemingly endless variety of topics was his trademark, and he could easily hold his own with just about anyone that I know. We shared countless dinners together, generally alternating the tab at our favorite restaurants and watering holes. While I might not have always discussed my personal concerns with Lou, his mealtime chatter was always guaranteed to make me forget any passing woes that I might have had. His loyalty was unfailing; his assistance, ever present. In sum, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had a friend like Lou in my life for so long -- How many of us do? -- and I will miss him so very, very much.

It's been over 20 years ago that you started making a difference in my life. You encouraged me to know myself, defend myself, and to stand up for what I believe. By believing in me you helped me to believe in myself. Your love, generosity, and friendship never wavered regardless of where our paths in life took us. As you used to say, I can't change the past, but I want you to be happy and will do whatever I can to keep a smile on your face. You certainly knew how to live for today and have things to look forward to tomorrow. I will miss you so much.

The world has lost a wonderful, unusual man. We came to know Lou when our son, Chris, spent a number of years swimming with Lou's Competition Swim Clinic. Not only did Lou turn him into a formidible swimmer, but he instilled in him a quiet determination and confidence and understanding of the value of hard work that has served him well for many years. Tough, kind, fair and loving: the characteristics that made Lou an excellent coach made him an unforgettable man. Rest in peace, Lou...your work lives on!

Over 35 years ago Lou came to one of our swim meets passing out flyers for his Competition Swim Clinic. I didn't start swimming competitively until I was 13 so my stroke mechanics were in a need of an overhaul so I joined right away. Lou was a terrific stroke coach and by the next summer-I had a room full of blue ribbons. Lou gave me my first job as an instructor which led to a two year stint as a swim coach and success as a private lesson instructor. Through his teachings so many doors opened for me, leading to a successful swimming career in college and participation at two NCAA tournaments as well as achieving All American status. Thank you Lou! My heart and prayers go out to the Sharp family and his broader swimming family. Lou was one of a kind.

I swam with Lou over 30 years ago and never forgot him. He was encouraging and funny, while giving me the confidence to move past a swim injury. He encouraged me to coach summer swim and I used my knowledge from him to teach stroke techniques to children and adults. My children are swimmers now and I often remember Lou while watching them in the water. My condolences to his family and friends.

Dear Lou,
I'm not sure where to start. You're an amazing man in so many ways. We were lucky enough to have found you as our girls' coach just over two years ago.

You reminded me of my grandfather who gave good tough love. Your true desire to see children improve in swimming was inspirational. You made the parents laugh out loud at times and the kids giggled too. You made them work so hard at practice but always allowed for a release at the end with the goggle toss. I have raved about you and your coaching style to anyone who would listen.

My girls improved nearly every Saturday after practicing with you. Your generosity in rewards for personal bests was remarkable!

Your humble, gentle and sweet disposition drew people to you.

We will miss you more than words can express.

Thanks for being such a great coach, a kind and generous friend and a smart & genuine person.

With love and thanks!

"Lou was a wonderful human being all around. My family will miss him for his generous advice on how to raise a child avoiding unnecessary missteps; and his special caring treatment of our daughter. Nicole was the beneficiary of many surprise gifts, as was I with book gifts which Lou thought would open my eyes to alternative viewpoints."

Rest in Peace Lou. Your words of wisdom will be missed. I rarely get the pleasure to meet such an intelligent person and enjoyed your insight on many things.

Coach Lou was the greatest coach there ever was. He was a firm believer in race specificity and trained us better than any coach could. He was witty, funny, tough, and most of all, loving. He had the biggest heart and really cared about his swimmers. Coach Lou, I will miss you and your memory will always stay with me and the rest of your swimmers every time we swim. I know that when I swim you will be right there with me rooting for me and telling me to go faster, in practice and in a meet.
