Marie Bunch Obituary

Our beautiful and beloved Mom (Granny), Marie E. Bunch, was called home to her Lord and Savior on April 27, 2025, at the age of 93. Marie was born on July 6, 1931, the youngest of five children to Mary and Victor Hill of Trenary, MI. She graduated with honors at age 17, turned down a scholarship to Northern Michigan University, Marquette and took a train to Denver, CO where she met and married the love of her life, George Bunch. Thus began their loving adventure of 57 years, until his death in 2007.
Settling in Prince George's County, MD, they raised three daughters and fostered two sons. Marie was a devoted wife and mother. She was an excellent seamstress and always made clothes for her girls and herself. She was a wonderful cook and made the best-ever apple pie. There was always room at our table for more.
She was a gifted artist and pursued her passion for art. She studied at the Washington School of Art and was awarded a certificate with honors in Fine and Commercial Art in 1969 and continued her studies through community college. She was an accomplished juried artist, painting well into her 80s.
In retirement George and Marie bought a hobby farm in Anne Arundel County, MD. It was the perfect place since she was a farm girl from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (a proud Yooper). She rediscovered her love of horseback riding, enjoyed gardening and loved entertaining her children and grandchildren.
A faithful servant of the Lord and lifelong Lutheran, she taught Sunday School, prepared food for church gatherings, created beautiful quilts to donate, and most of all loved to sing praises to the Lord.
Marie is survived by her daughters, Barbara Bunch (John Recore), Karen Leivian (late husband Michael Leivian), and Janice Bunch (Bob Wyche). Grandchildren Andrew Leivian (Christina), Eric Leivian (Tara), Ken Leivian, Katie Miller (Bret), and Ian Hubbard (Alyson). Great-grandchildren Kelly and Ashley Leivian, Oliver and Charlotte Hubbard. Foster sons, Philip Kelly and Andy Kelly (Susie).
Private service and Interment (at a later date).

As my Godmother, I always remember "Aunt Marie's" graciousness and fun humours. She always talked of the fond memories she had with my mother, Dorothy Haldeman, and the adventures they had. I will miss her dearly.

Mrs. Bunch's ever present smile is what I will always remember about her. No one smiled like her. She was always attentive to her guests at the July crab feasts on Kitridge Drive and Deale, Md. Her daughter, Karen, and I would venture out on Friday to "play miniature golf" (um...cruise the roads as teenagers), and she would just smile as we were heading out the door knowing there was no golf in our plans. She made great potato salad. But, most of all, she was a loving mom to her three beautiful girls. She taught them her skills, and they all have grown into adults with loving families of their own, carrying on Mrs. Bunch's gracious, talented and comforting manner.

Marie lived a long and full life. She was always so perky and positive. I don't recall ever seeing her when she was feeling down. Long ago, when I was attending Bethany Lutheran Church regularly, it seemed like Marie was always helping out in the church somehow, doing something, somewhere. The whole time I have been involved in the ministry of Bible translation, Marie has always been interested in hearing our news. She regularly prayed for us and for many years also helped support Same's and my work financially. Whenever we were in the area, she always wanted to get together with us. I am sure her death leaves quite a gap in your lives. But she is now home with the Lord, whom she served so faithfully all her life. We cannot bring her back (and should not want to!) But we know we will all meet together again one day, before God's throne, rejoicing in his presence in the heavenly city where there will never be death, illness, sorrow, or pain again!

Although I did not know Marie, I know Barb as a dear friend. Marie was clearly an amazing human with a big heart and a beautiful way of multiplying her gifts in endless ways. All those who she touched are blessed beyond measure.
