MARK DUNN Obituary

DUNN MARK DUNN It is with great sadness that the family of Mark Dunn announces his passing on April 30, 2021. He is survived by his partner of 29 years Pedro deBrito, his sisters Judy Serlenga (Bob), Janet Dunn (Bill Griffiths), Jean Dunn Gallagher (Jack), Mary K Dunn (Terry O'Sullivan), and brothers Paul Dunn (Trish), and Michael Dunn (Catherine Legan). He will be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews Abby, Lizzie, Genny, Ayana, Dylan, Brendan, Colin, Declan, Connor, Morgan, Liam, Maire, and Laura; his grandnieces Halina, Frances and Anna; his grandnephew Thomas; his sisters-in-law Ana Teresa and Cynthia; and his brother-in-law Britinho (Anunziatta). They are each grateful for every moment they had with him. Mark was a beautiful toddler, with wavy blonde hair, dark eyelashes and perfect skin. He would contentedly sit or stand in his playpen in the garden and wave to passersby, something that no doubt forever endeared him to his busy mother. He was an excellent student, and a relentless reader, with one book in hand and an eye for the next. Adored by his teachers and classmates, Mark had the knack of hiding his mischief-making. Along with his younger brother, he often played practical jokes on unsuspecting siblings and friends. There were many satisfying targets in his family of nine. He studied at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts. From 1983 to 1987 he worked in the day treatment program at Rock Creek Foundation in Silver Spring MD, an organization whose mission is to empower people with developmental disabilities and mental illnesses. A colleague from those years said that when Mark stepped into the office it was "like the sun came out." That warmth and compassion was felt by clients and staff alike. For many years between 1987 and 2011, he taught in the DC Public Schools. At Hardy Middle School, Mark successfully wrangled hundreds of sixth graders through their math requirements, while simultaneously tending to their social and emotional well-being. His teaching style was playful but firm. For some reason, many of his students were very happy to be rewarded for their improvements or accomplishments with goofy looking 70's Troll dolls. One of his many gifts was the ability to make immediate and direct connections with people. He was able to quickly assess, then anticipate, their needs. His magnetism pulled everyone to him and this skill kept them close. Neighbors and friends were often in his care. He ran errands, did handyman work, made phone calls, and helped with gardening tasks. Because of this gift, his nieces and nephews clamored for his attention. When they were little they always welcomed what he called a "good babysit." His childcare mantra was "it's allowed!" Every moment he was with them, Mark conferred upon those children what every child needs: complete and non-judgemental love and acceptance. He also helped to instill in them an anti-authoritarian attitude, sometimes to the chagrin of his siblings who were the "authorities." Those bonds with his nieces and nephews only strengthened as they grew into adulthood. Animals held a prime place in Mark's heart. Through the years he kept many cats and dogs but any animal he encountered had his respect and care. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of spiders can thank him for their freedom. An immediate family only gathering and burial will be held in Massachusetts. Mr. Dunn was one of my favorite teachers ever. He was my 6th grade homeroom and math teacher at Hardy Middle School and was essential in my transition from elementary to middle school all those years ago. He always went the extra mile to help me out and who could forget the Trolls. I was randomly compelled to look him up this morning and am truly saddened to learn of his passing, but to his loved ones, family, and friends, please know that Mr. Dunn was universally loved and respected by all of the students and fellow teachers that I personally saw him come across. I personally want to send my love appreciation for everything he did for me. Thank you Mr. Dunn! See you later!

My condolences. I found out through a classmate yesterday on Facebook of Mr. Dunn´s passing. He was my 6th Grade Math teacher at Hardy.

I remember he was one of my favorite teachers. It´s easy to have a favorite class when you like the subject. Math & Science were my favorites subjects.

It wasn´t an easy class but Mr. Dunn had a terrific style of teaching. I have a learning disability, speech language disorder & dyslexia. I was in special education classes since 2nd grade. School was always a challenge. I did manage to do well. I went to graduate school & became a Family Nurse Practitioner. My speciality is Neonatal Development.

Why share so much about myself?

Well, because none of these things happen without a great foundation.
That foundations was school & Mr. Dunn was certainly a catalyst in that path. Not just for myself but for ALL the children he taught over the years.

May you find comfort in knowing how many children´s lives he impacted over the years.
He was a very special teacher.
Best Regards,
Maria Gallo

I have had my daughter to search for Mark year after year. He came across my mind again about three weeks ago. And this time, she informed me of his passing. All along, he had returned to this area and was right under my nose. Mark and I worked together at Rock Creek Foundation and ate lunch everyday together. We made each others day with joy and laughter. What a magnificent person! Hmmm! So hurt. See you on the other end my buddy.

Mark was my best friend in my time for us in Turkey. Mark was the best of men, my friend, he and Judy were great. His father, and Mr. Hart, helped us greatly.

Everybody I know wanted to be with Mark, once they'd met him. He was one of what John Prine called 'a real fluorescent light.' He SAW you, and loved what he saw. And laughed with you about it, the whole megilla that life is. It's such a searing pain to have him gone. The family-writ-large that he left behind is forever enriched by his presence among us, and is charged with doing what we all can to shine some of that light of his wherever it's called for.

Mark, I'd give a lot to be able to tell you how I feel about you. And hug you once more.

I met Mark in the mid 1980s and, while we'd lost touch, I've thought of him often. He was a special guy: kind, thoughtful, caring, fun and funny. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. I only wish I'd had the chance to reconnect with Mark to tell him how much my husband and I thought of him. He left a lasting impression.

Mark was quite simply, one of the very best kids in high school. I had the pleasure of going on many “ adventures” with him and boy did we have fun!
I adored being with him . His handsome smile and penchant for mischief was a pure delight.
This world misses you Mark.
Heaven only gets the best .

I live two doors down from Mark’s home and didn’t know him well, but would always chat with him when he was out and about with his two dogs who he clearly adored. During the times we chatted, I could see what a caring person he was, so it was not surprising to learn about his life that was based on giving to others in such a wonderful tribute. My condolences to all who lost a friend, uncle, partner, brother. I will miss seeing Mark around the neighborhood.

I attended the University of Massachusetts with Mark. I remember him as fun-loving and mischievous. Above all, I found him a very accepting human being. I am so sorry for all his family and friends.

I think it was the blue boat- Mrs. Dunn's ("Jane's") car - in the driveway. We didn't have anything to do, so Mark got the keys and we all jumped in. Mark drove us down Pleasant Street. I thought he drove very well, and he didn't even have his license. Just one of the many glorious memories.

You will be greatly missed. Looking out of my window while watching you walk your 4 legged people babies, while taking care of many caring neighborly tasks like shoveling the snow for me, taking care of the trash, hilarious conversations, custodian of my car and house keys and many other caring acts. He will be missed. Leslie sutton, his next door neighbor

He brought structure to a subject that felt chaotic and challenging. You knew what to expect everyday. Checking each other's homework, lesson, classwork, then computer time if you finished early. As a teacher 27 years after I was in his classroom I do my best to be the Mr. Dunn in the subjects I teach.

Mr. Dunn was my teacher at Hardy back in 1993. I have such fond memories of his teaching style and energy that I carry much of it today. Grateful for all that he brought into the classroom and for all he was able to do in the many years after he was my teacher.

Mark, my beloved brother-in-law, your departure was very painful. I will forever miss you. If there is an afterlife, whenever I see you again, I will give you a big hug to comfort and to thank you for being part of my life.

This is very sad news. My boys were lucky enough to be in Mark's 6th grade math class and they adored him. Just today after hearing this news my youngest commented on how Mark taught legions of kids to ask, "May I?" instead of "Can I?" A good lesson learned, and not even math! Our deepest sympathies.
