Mark R. B. Stewart

Mark R. B. Stewart of Washington, DC died on November 24, 2023 after a short illness. As he was a young and handsome 67, he leaves behind many grieving family members and friends. His loving wife, Jeannine H. Turenne, is shattered by his loss. Mark loved "my J" and always kept her laughing. He also leaves behind his dear son, Matthew C. Jones, of Gainesville, Florida. Additionally, he leaves three heartbroken sisters, Catherine, Claire (Emil), and Susan (John). His niece, Renée and nephew, Dean will miss their funny, generous uncle. Mark leaves 20 wonderful first cousins, an aunt, Rogette Gerstle, and an uncle, Fred Pepper. His extended family is tearful. Mark kept some treasured longtime friends from the old days, including his closest buddy David Martin of Staten Island, NY and very good friend Kate Ryan of New York, NY, both of whom miss him so much.

Mark grew up in North Creek, NY, with his late parents, Ed and Joan Stewart, and three domineering and highly critical older sisters. We never knew that he was in dire need of glasses until his sister, Cathy, tried to teach him how to play baseball, and the ball just kept hitting him in the forehead. He was a quiet boy, understandably, and with his best friend, Ernie Beaudet, would play in his room for hours. Due to lack of photos of Mark and the fact that his sisters never noticed him until he was about four years old and able to walk and talk, they were sure he was adopted. They kept this up for years, and probably it will continue. Mark loved comic books and had an extraordinary collection until one of his sisters decided to clean out the closet after he had left for college.

After graduating from Johnsburg Central School, he attended college for one year, and then entered the U.S. Navy. After being honorably discharged, he returned to college and then earned a juris doctor degree from the University of Miami School of Law. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard and proudly served his country for 20 more years. After retiring as a Lieutenant Commander in 2003, he began a civilian government career at the U.S. Office of Government Ethics in Washington, DC. He made many warm, close friendships there, as well as elsewhere in D.C. and Virginia.

Mark was beloved for his sharp, clever wit; he frequently doled out zingers, sarcastic one-liners and hilarious emails. He enjoyed a good party, a funny joke, and ruining family pictures with bunny ears. He taught his wife how to solve crossword puzzles, and thoroughly enjoyed fixing her mistakes. He was always ready to lend a hand, and many times his house, and was a firm believer in paying it forward. We all will miss him, especially during summers at Garnet Lake, NY. We will continue to tease him, talk about him, and love him forever.

Mark's family will hold a memorial at their convenience.

Some what belatedly I learned of Mark's passing. I knew him and Dave Martin on Governors island for many years . He spent many hours in the officers club talking to my late wife Kim when she was working. He participated in promotion ceremonies and parties for me as I advanced in my career. Though we have not been close in recent years. He is a friend that I cherish and keep in my heart. I pray for mercy and grace for his entire family as they go forward in this difficult time.

My condolences to Mark Stewart's family. I have never met Mark, but his impact on me has been immense. His MOOC video series on financial disclosures and analyzing conflicts of interest were foundational to my government ethics career. I always mentioned him to his OGE colleagues and expressed hope that I would meet him and thank him in person.

Mark was an exceptional colleague, always ready to use his expertise to help when I was new to the agency, and to answer complex questions as the years passed. I never felt like I was bothering him, he was just that kind of a person- open and welcoming. He was also a treasured friend, someone whose presence I will miss. I always felt like he was being his authentic self, regardless of the situation, something that is terribly difficult to do and requires no small amount of courage and maturity. Rest in peace Mark, OGE misses you.

Cathy, Susan & Claire,
We were sad and shocked to read about Mark. We don´t have many memories of Mark in North Creek but we thought of him often because his bedroom was our conference room after we bought your family home for the engineering office. In reading the obituary and reading about Mark, you all received your Dad´s humor and may that and memories help you during this horrible time. We send virtual hugs and look forward to seeing you in the summer. Jim & Carolyn

Mark, I cried when I heard of your passing. I hope you know that you left an indelible mark on your colleagues at OGE. You were heroic in the way you showed courage under fire and grace through it all. You were always decent to everyone and had a way of making us laugh. You were like rock-n-roll and I will cherish that about you. It was an honor to know you. My heart goes out to your family and friends during this very difficult time. Rest in Peace Mark.

I´m so shocked and saddened to hear this. Mark was a really important part of my life for a long time during the Murphy´s era. When he was stationed in California he would come stay with me and my sister fora month or more at a time. Sending love to Jeanine and his sisters. We had one of the best weekends of my life with Mark and Claire in Napa Valley.

I'm brokenhearted to hear this news. Mark you were the teasing big brother who took my money at liar's poker any chance you got, you were a friend who always brought a smile, and my birthday near-twin that kept me feeling young (one last burn). It hurts my heart to think there will not be another round of banter, a reunion of laughter and shared stories. My heart goes out to your beloved sister and Jeannine. Thanks for the friendship Mark - you were a special part of my life and lives of so many others.

I called Mark my hero (he always laughed at that). Mark was always Mark, unapologetic and unpretentious. I loved that about him. Mark would express his thoughts, feelings, or opinions that were sincere and true to him, even if not favorable to some others. He stood by his principles. Mark and I worked in the same division at OGE for years, and he was definitely a team player. He was approachable and I liked his humor (dry but good). There was so much to like about Mark. This world would be a much better place with more people like Mark in it.

My sincere condolences to Mark´s "my Jeanne", son, entire family, and all who loved and cared for him.

Peace be with you,
Grace Clark

Mark, thank you for your warm greetings every day when I walked into the office and for all of our random, but always interesting conversations. My days will be a little poorer without you in them. May good memories ease the loss for Jeannine and your family.

Oh captain. my captain, how I will miss your sparkling wit and hilariously snarky repartee! You are the only man other than my husband who ever volunteered, more than once, to hold my purse for me while I ...(Fill the blank!) You were kind and generous to a fault. My heart is broken for Jeannine and your whole family.
Rest in peace my friend!

Marky Mark! Oh how I will miss your wit and your laugh. You and I were fast friends when we met at OGE in 2008. I will miss our trio (with Megan). I found our walkie talkie the other week and smiled. I wonder if it works wherever you are. My thoughts and prayers are with Jeannine and all those who loved him.

Dearest Mark (Mark the Shark, Sharky Marky, etc.). What fun times we shared these last 20 years. Thank you for all of the laughs and all of the times you were there for me when I needed a friend. You always had my back and I´m forever in your debt. There´s a big hole in my heart and in the hearts of everyone who knew you, and an empty seat at BVG that no one else can fill. Love you, man. My deepest condolences to your family.
