MEG GABRIEL Obituary

GABRIEL MEG & GEORG GABRIEL Margaret DeVecchi "Meg" Gabriel, 86, died peacefully in Washington, D.C. on February 14, 2016. Beloved wife for 50 years of the late K. Georg Gabriel, mother of Robert Paul Gabriel (Megan Roberts Gabriel) and Margaret Wendy Gabriel (Alex Totino); grandmother of Margaret, William and Honor Gabriel; sister of the late Robert P. DeVecchi, Meg was born in New York City, and attended both the Chapin School, Westover School, and Barnard College. A member of the Sulgrave Club of Washington, the Colony Club of New York, and the Junior Assemblies, she was a 48-year resident of Washington, a longtime volunteer at Washington''s Travelers Aid Society, and also served for many years as the Register for the Vestry of St. John''s Church, Lafayette Square. "Meg," as she was known, was gracious, selfless, dependable and funny, a lover of musicals, tennis, and anything made by Apple. We will never forget her loyalty, devotion and generosity to her family, as well as her insatiable curiosity. K. Georg Gabriel died peacefully at home in Washington, DC, November 12, 2011. He was 83. Beloved husband of 50 years to Meg Gabriel; father of Robert Paul Gabriel (Megan Roberts Gabriel) and Margaret Wendy Gabriel (Alex Totino); grandfather of Margaret, Will, and Honor Gabriel; at his passing, brother of Martin Gabriel of Halberstadt, Germany; and Peter Gabriel of Ashfield, MA; predeceased by three other siblings. Georg received his MBA from the Harvard Business School and a PhD in Economics from Harvard University. From 1967 to 1988, he held senior management positions at the World Bank, including Controller; Director of Programming and Budgeting; and VP Finance-International Finance Corporation. Georg managed the World Bank Pension Fund from 1972-1988. Georg also served on the Investment Committee of the Eugene and Agnes Meyer Foundation and on the boards of several mutual and investment funds. From 1988-2005, Georg was a Senior Advisor at Strategic Investment Partners, a Washington DC-based asset-management firm. Georg was a long-time member of the Metropolitan Club of Washington, DC. Georg''s graciousness, selflessness, humility, class and dry humor are among his many fine qualities that are missed by so many today. Meg and Georg met when Georg was at the Harvard Business School, married in New York City in 1961, and lived in Caracas, Venezuela, for three years, where Georg had started an oil-consulting firm. They lived in Cambridge, MA, for three years, while Georg earned a PhD at Harvard, and moved to DC in 1967, with Georg insisting that his family live close enough that he could walk to and from work at the World Bank every day. The Gabriel family spent summers and holidays at Meg''s parents'' farm in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania. They were a warm and gracious couple, and will be missed by so many whose lives they touched in unique ways. The Gabriel family will host a joint memorial service celebrating Meg and Georg''s lives at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 8, at St. John''s Church, Lafayette Square. A private burial ceremony will immediately precede the service. The Gabriel family will host a joint memorial service celebrating Meg and Georg''s lives at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 8, at St. John''s Church, Lafayette Square. My heartfelt condolences to the younger generation of the Gabriel family for Meg's loss. Georg and Meg were good friends and engaging dinner companions whose company my late wife (Pauline) and I enjoyed immensely whenever we met. I had the privilege of working closely with Georg for six years (1981-87) during which I appreciated and learnt much from his consummate professionalism and dedication. I shall miss them both terribly. Percy S Mistry (UK)
