Mike was my Deputy Associate Commissioner, par excellence, at the Child Care Bureau, ACF, HHS. He was a dedicated manager who earned much well-deserved respect. He was dapper, funny, and could be counted on to handle any situation with diplomacy and grace. Since his retirement from federal service, I have missed him time and again. Despite butting heads now and then, we were a productive team and had a lot of fun. Those of us still working in the child care arena fondly remember our hard work with Mike to promote President Bush’s Good Start, Grow Smart agenda for increasing the school readiness of young children. It’s a good legacy that helped raise new awareness about the importance of children's early years. My sympathy goes out to his family and friends. He will surely be deeply missed.

My sincerest condolences. Mike and I worked in the Children's Bureau together. His insight and dedicated to the work were inspiring. I am the current Deputy in Bureau, the position that he once held. I will always be grateful to him for his mentoring. He made my transition into the position less rocky that it could have been and he was a master at managing sticky personnel issues. He was a good friend and a good man. He is and will continue to be missed.

I feel so blessed to have known "Highpoint Mike" as I lovingly called you. You were a One-Day Hike (ODH) training friend to me, and to so many others, over the years... Always willing to slow-down to match my pace for a fun chat before continuing on at your much brisker normal pace. You shared a lot with me, to include your love of the Highpoints. I will miss our deep philosophical discussions... But, I have a feeling you've got it all figured out now! :) Love, Your Sibling-in-Christ, Pammy Sue

Together over the years Mike and I walked the Camino de Santiago, both the French and Portuguese Routes, and The Thames Path. On these long distance walks, we had a lot of time to talk and really got to know one another. He was a man with many interests and truly devoted to causes he believed in. I learned a lot being in Mike’s company. I am going to miss him.
