MICHAEL DOUGHERTY Obituary

DOUGHERTY Michael Gregg Dougherty October 31, 1982 - March 9, 2022 Michael Gregg Dougherty (39) passed away peacefully on March 9, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. Throughout his valiant, 19-month battle with cancer, and in spite of ongoing pain, he remained kind and concerned for his family and friends. His wife Olya steadfastly stood by Michael day and night, to his great comfort. Michael is the son of Gregg and Robin Dougherty of Bethesda MD and St. Augustine FL. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Jim and Jeanne Dougherty. He is survived by his wife; children Nathaniel and Vivian; his brother Miles Dougherty (Madeleine); his grandparents Ted and Robin Withington of New York City; his uncles Marsh Dougherty (Mary Ann) of Chevy Chase MD and Bill Withington (Jan) of Portland OR; his aunt, Amy Withington of Philadelphia; his niece Josephine Dougherty; and cousins Kat Dougherty, Ryan Dougherty(Laura), Aidan Elwood, Liam Elwood, Brandon Withington, and Jacob Withington. He is also survived by Olya's family in St. Petersburg, Russia. Michael grew up in Bethesda, MD and graduated from Norwood School (1995), St. Albans School (2001), The College of William and Mary (2005 - BS computer science and Russian), and Columbia University's Fu School of Engineering (2006 - MS computer science and network systems). In late 2000, Michael found the love of his life and future wife at St Albans while she was an exchange student there. They both attended and graduated from Columbia in 2006, and were married a year later at Washington National Cathedral in the Bethlehem Chapel. Michael worked for two years at Columbia's IT department before moving to Silver Spring and joining White Oak Technologies in 2009. Michael and Olya were blessed with the births of Nate and Vivi in 2012 and 2015 respectively, and moved to North Bethesda in 2017. During this time and up to 2020, Michael continued to work in software design and network support on a variety of federal contracts. Michael was considered to be an expert in the development of cloud security and network systems. Michael was a loving husband, father, brother, and son, and found tremendous joy in watching his children grow. He was an avid gamer, and loved getting together with friends and family as often as possible for video games, board games, and escape rooms of all kinds, whether virtual or in person. The communities of Old Farm, North Bethesda, St. Albans School, and St. John's Episcopal Church have all rallied to support Michael and his family during this difficult time. A memorial service at St. John's Episcopal Church will be held on April 2 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to teamtrees.org. I miss you Mike. Would have really liked to retry Warcraft 2 or Battle Toads again on a newer PC. Would have been a fun project to try and get them to run again.

I love this way of sharing memories about Mike! This album will continue to grow, and I will revisit the site often. He has such a perceptive, sweet, and kind pure soul, and he continues to inspire me to strive to become a better person. It is a rare blessing to be his aunt, and this collection of memories will be treasured by his wonderful children, and the generations to follow.

Mike and I worked together on a project for a while and he was a joy to work with. I would enthusiastically say, "Mike D.!" (like the way it's said for Mike D. of the Beastie Boys) the first time I would see him that day and we would both laugh. Great mind and a better spirit. "Mike D.!" will be missed. Rest in power...

I only learned of this terrible news today. I am so sorry for your loss. Mike was an amazing, kind, and resilient man. He was an excellent classmate and friend at St. Albans, and I was so glad we were able to reconnect recently and get a few good matches of Pokemon Unite and Knockout City in. His entire family will be in my prayers.
