Mike and I came up on each other´s radar screens sometime in the mid/late 80s over our common interest in something called Salt Diapirism (only a geologist would know what that means) in the coastal waters of Norway. Over the years we became friends, I visiting him at his ice cream factory (which he had converted into an experimental laboratory for de-salinizing seawater) in Saint Petersburg FL, and later making it a regular part of my year to come visit him in DC, sometimes as his guest at the Explorers Club also with my son. Mike was a generous soul and quite a mover/shaker in his fields (seabed geoacoustics when we first met, and later making his mark in the gas hydrate field, leaving an indelible mark in every field through which he traveled) and he left a big hole in my life when he left us. Still does!

Michael´s memory is a blessing. He lived large and was an inspiration to us. Gone but not forgotten.

Working together at research labs (NRL and LaSpezia), Mike and I have been friends, colleagues, shipmates on research cruises, and coauthors - and our families have been dear friends throughout. As fanatic Badgers, we shared memories of the University of Wisconsin Geology & Geophysics Program, although our times (Mike's undergraduate and my graduate) did not overlap.
My wife Joann and I extend our deepest sympathy to Eleanor, Rachel, and the family. As we say in our tradition, "May his memory be for a blessing."

I met Mike first time at a conference in Norway during 2011, and since then he and his books had been an inspiration to me, motivated me to continue my research in the field of gas hydrates.
Mike had a unique personality, with a wide background in different aspects of science and engineering, and a great visionary about the future of gas hydrate applications in human race and beyond planet earth. The gas hydrates community will greatly miss his ideas and inspirations. Condolences to his family.

I only met Michael at research conferences, but he made a big impression. He spoke and you wanted to listen; he left you smiling, and wondering about things you thought you knew; and how he could have so many backgrounds. A sad loss to them all. Condolences to his family.

As one of the younger cousins, it's hard to imagine our huge family diminished by his loss. Michael was the boys boy, the mans man. Strong, fit, fearless, and witty. My childhood in Madison during the summers were filled with staying in his room whenever I could while he was away. I'll cherish having known my big cousin Michael and the coolest memory was playing in his Lotus as it sat in our Garage. Sad story! Poor car, poor Michael! Hope you're racing around in it wherever you are!

I was privileged to know Max through a shared interest in gas hydrate research. We hatched some plots together, not all of them successful. I wish you now that "peace that passeth all understanding" after a life well lived.

Mike and I worked together for many years in the Geological Survey of Ireland, Dublin. In fact we shared office there. He was a very hard working and straight speaking person. Very innovative and multitalented. I knew Eleanor as well. Since he left Ireland, we have only met a couple of times when he would have visited Ireland but I have fond memories of him.
I offer my sincere condolences to Eleanor and Rachel and her family. May he Rest in Peace.

y heart goes out to Eleanor, Rachel and Mike's family. Max was a huge influence at the start of my geological career 1973 onward. it was a wonderful experience to work with him on several hairy marine projects with the Geological Survey of Ireland and to play rugby with him for Monkstown RFC. I will remember Michael as a great down to earth practical guy. Always positive in spirit , straight forward full of new ideas and looking for innovation. We had so much fun together working in La Spezia. He will be dearly missed. My deepest sympathy to Eleanor and Rachel.

Mike was my first cousin. Over the last 5 years we corresponded quite a bit and I learned about all the interesting things he did. It was a blast. Will miss. Jon Seltzer
