Phil gave us a new and fuller appreciation for the life and works of Richard Wagner. Phil also provided the sound for so many wonderful lectures at Funger Hall. Above all, Phil's high spirit and deep feelings for the Master's music were pleasantly addictive. We will miss Phil very much.
With deepest condolences,

My condolences and deepest sympathy. I knew Phil from the very earliest days of the Wagner Society of Washington, DC. He was an enthusiastic music lover and had a great knowledge of Wagner's works. I learned so much from him and enjoyed his wisdom as a colleague and fellow Wagner Society member.

My sister and I met Phil at the Met Opera in NYC. He sat next to me and admired my collection of Native American Jewelry. I discovered his love for Wagner.
We met him several times and chatted at the Met. He knew so much about music and was most engaging. I feel fortunate to have encountered such a unique and talented man and am so sorry for the loss - to many. He will be missed by all who knew him.

My husband Dave and I knew Phil for many years. We all worked as speech/language pathologists with Montgomery County Public Schools.
We were also involved in the Amway business with Phil and his then wife Sharon.
Phil and I also shared a love of music - I have great memories of accompanying him on the piano while he sang show and popular tunes.
Occasionally Dave and I would see Phil and Kathy at a Kennedy Center concert.
I hadn't spoken to Phil in the last few years, but the last time we did talk, he was busy with his Wagner Society work, pursuing his love of opera.
Condolences to Martha, Carrie, and Kelley, to his stepmother Balnche Raiines, to all his relatives, and to all those who loved him.
Phil definitely touched a lot of lives.

I was a freshman at the University of Maryland extension campus on McGraw Kasern in Munich with Phil,1968-69. I will never forget skiing with him in Kitzbuel, Austria; nor listening to his magic on the piano in the student lounge. I only recently re-found him via Google, and enjoyed a precious few emails.

Our condolences to Martha and family.
I met Phil in College, and we were close friends for about 10 years. I tried to find Phil’s whereabouts 3 months ago, and he was living about 3 miles from me. He helped me work with the school system for special help for our daughter Joy and was totally successful. He said he was so happy to re-new friendship, and was so happy to help Joy. He was always the life of the party, a teacher of special children, drama teacher and a child-advocate.
A box of about 600 of his photos were mailed to him 2 weeks ago. He sat up all night looking through his life in pictures, and showing Martha until she fell asleep. The start was skiing in Germany or Austria as a teen…. portrait photos as a late teen.....the Amway years …..and a lot on stage.........through his teaching and drama years........... and many photos of him on walks in the most beautiful parks, forests, beaches, monuments, and around lakes all over USA.....his VW bus / camper....playing guitar in many outdoor parks and near outdoor fireplaces ..............and through his 50's.
I am glad that I contacted him when I did. We had two dinners together, with Barbie and Martha, 2 school meetings, 2 planning meetings, and one really heart to heart talk about the last 30 years. He was thrilled that I searched for him, and that our friendship was renewed.
What if I had waited 3 months to contact him? God's direction and timing we cannot argue. I pray to see him in heaven.

When we heard about Phil's passing, recollections of music, laughter, and real conversation came naturally and easily to us. Even though we had lost touch with each other over the years, we still feel the loss.
Our heart-felt condolences to those who also feel that loss.

Dear Dr Kern,
I am very sorry to read of your husband's death. This must be very hard for you. Think of the joy your love and company brought to him. "Who can find a virtuous wife? The heart of her husband safely trusts her. Her children rise up and call her blessed. Her husband also he praises her", Prov.31. Comfort to you from the God of all comfort. Love,

My wife Lisa and I knew Phil when he was married to Sharon many, many years ago. He brought a great deal of light to this world to many, and he will be missed. We were both so shocked to hear of his passing. He was just one of those guys frozen in my memory with a constant spark of life.
