Raymond Cavanagh Obituary

CAVANAGH
RAYMOND C. CAVANAGH
On Wednesday, January 17, 2024, Raymond C. Cavanagh of Vienna, VA., beloved husband of 56 years of Eileen Bleeg Cavanagh, died peacefully. Ray was born on July 25, 1942 in Evergreen Park, Illinois. He was the oldest of six children of Raymond P. and Jane W. Cavanagh. After graduating from St. Ignatius high school (Chicago) in 1960, he went on to study mathematics at the University of Notre Dame. After graduating in 1964, he attended the University of Maryland at College Park, where he received his PhD in math, and, more importantly, met his future spouse, the beautiful fellow math student Eileen Bleeg. Ray and Eileen had two children, Sharon Edelmann (Paul) and Maura Burke (Joe). He spent the majority of his work life at SAIC where his expertise was underwater acoustics. Ray was blessed with five grandchildren ("Pops" to them) whom he adored and passed on his witty sense of humor: Thomas Edelmann, Jackson Edelmann, Claire Edelmann, Ian Burke, Jed Burke.
A celebration of life will be on Friday, February 16 at 11 a.m. at St John Neumann in Reston, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to S.O.M.E. (So Others Might Eat) at some.org

I remember Ray's music. It was at family gatherings at my Aunt Jane's house. Ray would sit down at the piano and just create wonderful songs as a young child I thought he was terrific!!
