Robert Conway Obituary

Robert W. Conway (Age 93)
Of Alexandria, VA peacefully passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2017. Born in Philadelphia, PA to John W. and Elizabeth D. Conway. He met and married his beloved wife, Marguerite M. McGowan and raised four daughters, Suzanne (D), Deborah, Nancy, and Joan. He was a proud Marine, serving in WWII and the Korean War. During WWII, he bravely fought in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific Theater. He stayed in touch with many of his Marine buddies throughout their lives ? Semper Fi! In 1956, he moved to Virginia to work in the beginning of the airline industry and retired from United Airlines where he made lifelong friends of his co-workers. He loved his grandchildren, Katerina and Ethan (his best playmates and supporters), his yard, and Hawaii. He was a loving and decent man with a wide circle of people who loved and cared for him and vice versa. He always chose the right path, no matter what the personal sacrifice was to himself. He loved his family, God, and his country. We want to thank all of the caregivers and helpers from Optum who cared for him like family over the last six months. And all of his friends and family who stayed in contact with him over the last several years when he was homebound. Services will be held on February 20 at 11 a.m. at Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church, 2001 Sherwood Hall Lane, Alexandria, VA 22306, with a reception to follow. Interment at Mt. Comfort Cemetery, Alexandria, VA, where he will be buried next to his beloved wife, Marge, and daughter, Suzanne. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his name to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (www.nmcrs.org). DEMAINE FUNERAL HOME, Alexandria, VA is handling the arrangements. www.demainefuneralhomes.com
