ROBERT DAVID HOFFMAN "Hoff"

Robert "Hoff" David Hoffman, 76, passed away on February 6, 2023. He was a resident of Washington, DC.

Born on April 27, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York to Herbie Hoffman and Anni Goldberg Hoffman, Hoff lived in New York City until age 25. He was a graduate of New York Law School and began his career as a Public Defender there. He completed his career as a Vice President of AARP in Washington, DC, and continued his work for AARP as a volunteer for many years after his retirement.

In Washington, DC, he lived in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood and was involved with many volunteer activities in the community. He was a founder of Mount Pleasant Village, a community-based organization that supports residents who want to age in place, and a volunteer at Bancroft Elementary School, which is attended by his grandson, Ethan.

Hoff's interests were varied and eclectic. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, particularly soccer as a coach, player and fan. He was a DC United season ticket holder for over twenty-five years. He was a great dog lover and created many memories with his dogs Morgan and Chance. He was a member of the Jewish Renewal group Minyan Oneg Shabat in Washington, DC and Temple Rodef Shalom in Arlington VA. Additionally, he was a square dance caller, a docent at Congressional Cemetery, lead historic tours of Washington, DC, and created workshops about end-of-life planning. He was an avid collector of harmonica cases, and got great joy from displaying his collection around Washington and at the Burlington Farmers Market in Vermont every summer.

Hoff is survived by his wife Dianne Modell, sister Caren, sons Elias and Josh; sister-in-law Tudy Fowler, daughters-in-law Amanda Kilgour and Anna Salzberg, grandchildren Ethan, Remy and Judah and a great slew of wonderful step-children and step-grandchildren from both of his marriages. He will be forever remembered as a vibrant and loving father, husband and grandfather, for his quick wit, his love of magic and his commitment to community. His vibrant spirit lives on, and can be seen on full display at: hoffharmonica.com/end-of-life.

Private services will be held with close friends and family.

I´m so sorry to hear about Hoff. We played soccer together in the old guy league 55+ for the Why Nots.
Hoff was a great teammate and was a great goalkeeper!
He´ll be missed.
My sincere sympathies.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Hoff. I only knew him for a few months, ultimately the last few of his life. But his vibrancy, passion, joy, enthusiasm, and, most importantly, kindness meant the world to me. Those few months that I had the pleasure to be around him will remain with me until the end of my own life.

To know him was a unique pleasure and awarding him Congressional Cemetery's Docent of the Year (something he would have LOVED for me to remind everyone) will stay with me as a warm memory on a day he was positively brimming with all of the things that made him special; his passion, his joy, his humor, his good nature, and his love for others.

My wife and I send our thoughts and hopes to the family during this trying time.

One travels the world to expand your mind, see beautiful sites, and meet interesting people. That is certainly what happened when Leslie and I met Hoff and Diane in Mexico City. Over a glass of wine in a hotel lobby, we discovered lots of common interests and connected on many levels. Hoff was a beautiful sole and a fascinating person. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, including those, like us, who only shared a brief time together.

I never saw Hoff default into cynicism or negativity. His smile was always there, and it engendered smiles on the faces of many others. He was a willing and loyal friend, and he offered help of any kind whenever anyone asked for it. He will be greatly missed. So will his tales of having attended Woodstock. Mud-splattered but wondrous!
