Robert Koehler Obituary

KOEHLER
ROBERT HUGHES KOEHLER
Robert Hughes "Bob" Koehler slipped peacefully from this life on January 26, 2024. Born in 1941 in Kansas City, Kansas, Bob earned his AB from Marquette University. He received his JD from the University of Kansas where he met his beloved wife of 56 years, Susan McMillin Koehler.
Upon graduation from law school, Bob served as a Captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps of the United States Army and volunteered for duty in Vietnam. After his military service, Bob joined the law firm Patton Boggs in Washington, DC. He quickly made Partner and remained with the firm for 41 years until he retired.
Always active on community and corporate boards, Bob was most proud to be on the Board of the USO of Metropolitan Washington where he served as President. Later Bob and his wife moved to Amelia Island.
A superb athlete, Bob ran 27 marathons. For many years he and Susan spent time hiking mountains: Kilimanjaro, the Himalayas, the Inca Trail and the Camino de Santiago. In Florida Bob became obsessed with pickleball and was a founding member of the Wicked Pickles.
Committed to his deep Catholic faith, Bob walked a path of unwavering conviction. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jerome and Cleo Belle. Bob leaves behind his wife Susan; sons, Christopher and Mark (Jill); grandchildren, Luke and Millie; brother, Jerome; nephew, Jerry and nieces, Kristen, Gretchen, Moira and Erica.
A memorial mass will be held on Friday, February 9, 2024 at 12 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Fernandina Beach. Bob will be interred at Jacksonville National Cemetery on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at 12:30 p.m. with Military Honors.
Donations in Bob's honor can be made to Tunnel2Towers Foundation.

My condolences, Susan, to all of you. How fondly I remember meeting you and Bob when we all signed up for the Personal Best Marathon Training program. Bob would lead our endless laps around the track at South Lakes High School. He flawlessly kept the correct pace for us, lap after lap. I also remember when the 3 of us ran the Atlantic City Marathon together. The day before the marathon Larry drove us around the 26.2 mile course. I had never checked out a course before running it, and I couldn't decide if it was beneficial to know where the grades were or was it better to simply be naive. We had a great day, a great race. I will always treasure these memories of a gentleman and a "gentle man" and of you, Susan, his sweet wife and best friend.

Love, hugs, and blessings,

I met Bob a few years ago on the Pickleball courts. We started as 3, then 4 people. Suddenly, the "Wicked Pickles" team grew to 20 people. Bob was a founding member of our group and quickly became quite an accomplished player. He would watch videos and then offer his playing tips to all of us. He was an inspiring gentle soul. Bob made us better players and better people. Our group became a real community caring for each other.

He really did live life to the fullest at the youthful age of 84.

I miss him so much (as do all the "Wicked Pickles") however, I am comforted by the fact that he is no longer in pain and is in heaven..........if there are courts in heaven...........you can bet Bob is playing PickleBall!
Rest in peace my dear friend.

Bob was just a great friend growing up through the years.
We never got into a fight. We did have a disagreement when I returned one summer, but she soon went to the convent.
WOW what a guy.

Bob was a classmate at Rockhurst High School, and we we became closer as our senior year approached. To my regret, we lost contact over the years, but I remember him well as a good man, even then. I am so sorry to learn of his passing. We talked at our last class reunion, and he was obviously excited about moving to Florida. I trust he had some good years there, and I'm sure he made grand friends as he did everywhere he went. My sincere condolences to his family. May the many fine memories of a life well-lived sustain them and give them peace as they grieve his passing.

Dear Susan:
Many of my memories of Robert are of meeting and chatting in the alley as we went to check on our mail, and of course out on the McLean streets as we each ran on our own routes and at our own pace. I purposely avoided running with him on the outbound leg because I knew that at some point I'd get pooped and he would keep going. And that was after he had survived cancer and heart surgery. If I were the jealous type, Robert would be one of the very few people of whom I would be jealous. I'm glad I knew him and still miss you both here in McLean. Sandy and I offer our sympathy and wish you well. Give Robert our well wishes when you next talk to or think about him.

I also had the pleasure of working with Bob at Patton Boggs, which worked on Veterans Day. The previous day we (the 9th floor crew) had stood outside Bob´s office complaining we had to come into the office on a holiday. The next day being the holiday, Bob did not show up to the office at his normal time. Donna his assistant at the time called Bob at home with a few of the 9th floor crew standing at her desk, having our normal two minute coffee and chat to start our morning. This until Bob would come out of his office to say "enough time to get to work." When Bob answered the phone Donna asked him if he was coming in the office? Bob responded with "we work today!!!" Going forward we the 9th floor crew would remind Bob the day before to come into the office as we worked Veterans Day!!!
Susan & family we are sorry for your loss. Bob and his 2 yougurt lunch was truly a gift to us all.
Lifting you all in prayer,
Linda Gray
