Bob could light up a room or the entire outdoors--he was that charismatic. His wasn't a selfish beacon, but one that shone from the delight in his soul for sharing all that he cared about. As an employee at the National Arboretum, I saw Bob come and go, doing the countless chores for the Youth Garden that brought him close to just a few of his passions: gardening, wildlife, and kids. Our brief encounters always raised my spirits. You just couldn't help but be uplifted by this man's joyful energy. Even the last time I saw Bob, wheelchair bound and knowing his time was short, he made me smile. Lives like Bob's truly continue through the people he inspired to make the world a better place though our actions and our compassion. I hope all who loved Bob may take some comfort in this as they cope with the loss of this amazing man.

My condolences to the whole family. Bob was always an inspiration for me. He touched the lives of countless Youth Garden participants and I witnessed just a few instances of this. He had a knack for drawing kids into the natural world and cultivating their fascination for nature, all the while inspiring them to do great things with their lives. I will miss his quick wit, selfless caring for others, and reverence for nature.

I had the pleasure of working with Butterfly Bob at the U.S. National Arboretum. No matter how cold, hot, or rainy Butterfly Bob was there to work in the Youth Garden. His smile cheered up everyone he encountered and his efforts provided food and homes for pollinators of all kinds. He was a special person who will be dearly missed.

Amy - my sincere condolences on Bob's passing. He was a gentle soul and always a pleasure to work with.My fondest memory of him was 22 years ago at Don Hirschfeld's retirement. I had my 3 month old daughter with me and Bob asked to hold her. With perfect ease he picked her up and held her to his chest. My daughter immediately snuggled her head into his shoulder and quickly fell asleep. She stayed that way for about an hour. Even though I asked several times if he wanted to give her up, he insisted he was fine and was enjoying it. He was a wonderful man. I know he will be missed. Take care, sincerely, Gail Leithauser

I'm glad I had the privilege of having him in my life and Christian, Ellie Abby and Jessica ' s lives as well. I could not have asked for a better father, friend and roll model. He never stopped believing in me no matter where I was in life. He taught me alot about myself and life in general. I hope to be as good a father to my children as he was to me. I love you dad and I will miss you very much. Your pain has been eased. Be free and watch over us.

I will share my FB memorial post that I wrote for Uncle Bob so more people with have the chance to read it:
Uncle Bob was such a bright light in this world. A lover of nature (birds and butterflies especially) and children; nothing brought more light to those twinkling eyes of his than those two things. Soft spoken (a rarity in our loud family) and sweet natured. An ice cream lover. Smart. A master of making goofy expressions...especially when children were around. A world traveler and liberal minded being. If I ever get the chance to see half the places he and my Aunt Amy visited, I will be a happy person. He had the best white beard I've ever seen....naturally when he came into my life when I was a kid, I thought he was a Santa Claus look-a-like. He will be so greatly missed by all of us, but so thankful that he is at peace now. I will miss getting one of Bob's amazing, secure hugs. You truly could feel the love he had for you all in a hug. I know Bob thought our family was something truly special and loved being a part of it, but Bob was just as special and we all couldn't imagine our family without him. Bob, I hope that your soul is flying high on the wings of a butterfly or bird right now and you are looking over all of us. I love you.
