Roger and Carol were good friends and colleagues from Niger. Roger was a knowledgeable ag economist and a good softball player. He was easy to be around, and he and Carol were valuable members of the Niamey community. He will be missed. Lyn and Jim

Roger was one of the people who first welcomed me to Michigan State University in the late 1970s, making it seem more welcoming knowing there were other people with experiences similar to mine (West Africa, Peace Corps) attending. I later worked with him briefly on a trip to Burkina around 1983, and then he was a very helpful consultant to us in USAID´s Africa Bureau and the Food Security Bureau, after his retirement bringing his wealth of experience and good judgment to the design of new agriculture and food programs. Roger was always helpful, humble, and unruffled, giving wise counsel, a pleasure to work with. May he rest in peace. -- David Atwood

From about 1955-1965, the Blooms' home in Oak Harbor, Ohio, was three houses away from my family's. When Roger and I were very young, inspired by television shows such as "The Buccaneers" and the 1934 film version of Treasure Island, the two of us often played at being pirates. More than a few times, Roger shared with me his plans for adventure in places like Timbuktu and Kathmandu. Of course, Roger's work eventually took him to both those spots and to plenty of other locales he had dreamed of visiting. Over the years, we never lost track of each other. He was a great friend.
