My late husband, Nick, worked with Sam and always spoke warmly of him. I met Sam on a number of occasions: He invariably had a welcoming smile and charming laugh for me and our two small sons.

I know that the NIST community will miss Sam greatly and remember him for a long, long time.

May you find peace during these hard days of sorrow and loss.

Dear Trevino Family:

I am so sorry for your loss. I always felt so warm and welcome in your home - even during my grass cutting days. Sam always greeted me, with a gigantic hug and kiss. He will be remembered always. Your family is in my heart and prayers.

If I had to pick a word to describe Sam, and it really applies to both Sam & Julie, it would be exuberance -- exuberance and a joy of life that was infectious -- if you've spent any time with any of their children you know where they got it from -- that Treviño/Gonzalez smile, they've all got it :) Sam was like a kid in a candy shop his whole life, well at least the half that I knew him, so I'm guessing he was like that when we was young too. What do you get when you cross Jim Carey with a nuclear physicist -- Sam Treviño. When I was in 10th grade Sam was my CCD teacher -- I liked it because it was a short walk; we had it in the living room of their house and Sam taught us Bible history. My sister Kathy had the same experience; she thinks it was conspiracy between Sam & Julie and my parents to keep us from skipping CCD (which I never did -- seriously). A year later I started playing in a band with their son Jorge, we would often practice in the living room of their house. On several occasions Sam & Julie would dance in the front hall while we played; it's always nice to have a couple of crazy kids in the audience :) A few years after that when I was in college Sam found out that I had access to the engineering school's computer system, he was working on a simulation of diatomic particle explosions and needed some computer time. I was happy to oblige and he showed me a few things about computer simulations in the process. I was surprised and honored when some time later he gave me a copy of the paper that he wrote about the simulated explosions and listed my assistance with the computer time in the credits. When my sister Megan was in college Sam asked her what she was going to do; she said she had no idea. Sam asked her about the kinds of things that she liked to do and told her she should became a medical technician. She did -- and has been working and now running the lab at Montgomery General Hospital since she got out of college over 20 years ago. Then of course there was the infamous discussion Sam had with my Aunt Pat about the herefter and whether or not it was located in northeast Ohio; I'm sure most of you would agree that there they're having a good laugh about that now wherever it happens to be. Through it all there was that laugh -- and the funny, silly faces he made. That exuberance coupled with a deep sincerity was what made the experiences we had with him memorable. Here is a brief quote that seems appropriate: "Life is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one." I think that's how Sam lived his life and we will do well to accept that gift from him and pass it on.

Dearest Julie, You must have gone through a lot in these last days. God sees and knows your sufferings. Peace from above and strength from your God for you and your family. We prayed for Sam and you at our last novena and Sam is now healed. My memories of Sam are of a brilliant, happy man who loved his wife and family so very much. My beautiful friend Juliette, I want to express my deep sorrow to you and your family in your time of loss. My heart is heavy with grief and would give anything if I could be there for you.

It seems like only yesterday that we were all together filled with joy, and blessing the opportunity we had to rekindle our friendship. I am so very grateful we have those beautiful moments to remember.

One thing I know for sure, the love you and Sam had for each other was endless and I know that will remain in your heart forever.

I Love you my beautiful friend, someday we shall all meet again and what a glorious day that will be.

Close your eyes and feel God's loving arms around you.

Sam: We'll remember you always. Every time we find an all-purpose shirt we'll remember all the great times we've had. You always made us laugh and you tried to educate us about good literature with little success. It was our privilege to be your "bestest" friends. Love you.
