Sandra Cox Obituary

The Cox and DeFreitas Families announce the passing of our beloved mother, Sandra Cox, who transitioned from this life on June 2, 2024 in Winter Garden, Florida after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Sandra was born in Boston, MA on July 7, 1939. She was the only child of Sandy Victor Hargraves and Maude Bullock Hargraves. At an early age, Sandra's family relocated to Washington, DC where Sandra was raised. She was a graduate of Spingarn High School and furthered her education at Howard University where she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. before graduating in 1960.

Her first union was blessed with two sons Louis and Victor. Sandra moved to New York where she lived for 14 years and married the love of her life, the late Lamar Cox. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Veronica and two step children, Angela and Byron. Sandra returned to Washington in 1978 and resided in Shepherd Park for the remainder of her life. In addition to her parents, Sandra was preceded in death by her husband Lamar Cox and her son Victor Burwell DeFreitas. She is survived by her children Louis A DeFreitas Jr., Veronica Lynn Cox, step children Angela Cox Cooper and Byron Cox; and grandchildren Victor DeFreitas Jr., Michael Douglas DeFreitas, Gabriela DeFreitas and Daniel Cox.

A celebration of life service is planned for late September 2024. Please send donations to The Michael J. Fox Foundation in Mrs. Cox's honor.

I remember Sandra fondly as a poised, beautiful neighbor and business owner who I came to know while working together on the Gateway Georgia Avenue Revitalization Corporation. We planned and implemented various activities to improve the upper Georgia Avenue corridor. Through her, I met Lamar, another charming, impressive talent. (There's a picture of Larmar, another neighbor, and her in the Georgia Avenue & U Business Directory, which I still use.) Their corner-lot home was lovely; the yard always beautifully manicured. As I read the obituary, I realize that there is much that I didn't know about Sandra, but I'm not surprised. She was a model and inspiration to me, and I'm sure to countless others. May the many fond memories give you peace on this anniversary of her passing. Sincerely, Cynthia Prather

Sandra was my Sorority sister. I would sometimes see her on my walks through 14th street several years ago. I was saddened to her of her transition. Condolences to her family. Rest in Perfect Peace Sandra.

My husband Paul and I remember Sandra and Lamar with fondness. They were wonderful Shepherd Park neighbors. We bought our first home security system from them. Their grandson, Victor, was a classmate of our son, Jared. Sending prayers of comfort and peace to their family. May they both rest in power.

I am so sorry to hear of Sandra's passing. I met her in the early aughts while doing some promotional artwork for Sandra's and Lamar's security business, ASC. She was a warm and gregarious person with a keen intellect and and wickedly funny wit. I am bereft. My sincerest condolences to her family. She will not be forgotten.

So sorry to hear about Sandra's passing! (I learned the news today via the Shepherd Park list serve.) Sandra and Lamar were such a lovely couple as well as consummate professionals, and they were very supportive of the upper Georgia Avenue business community. I was fortunate to work with her on the Georgia Avenue Revitalization Corporation in 2009 and was continually impressed by her calm spirit, warm personality, and quiet, yet inspiring presence. (I have one picture, which I will attach in a follow up email.) She was a wonderful role model who I will always remember.
