SCOTT BISTLINE Obituary

SCOTT ADAMS BISTLINE "Scotty"
Passed away on Thursday morning, March 27, 2014, in Alexandria, VA. Although Scotty was diagnosed with a serious illness, his passing at this time was sudden and unexpected. Born June 21, 1956, Scotty was a lifelong resident of Northern Virginia. He spent most of his life in the areas of Wellington and Hollin Hall and was a 1974 graduate of Fort Hunt High School. Scotty was an accomplished guitar and bass player, very active on the local and regional music scene. Over the years Scotty was a member of many bands, including "Hole in the Wall", Studebaker Hawk", "The Casaloma Cowboys", "Third Shift", "Paradise Alley" and others. More often than not his exemplary bass lines laid a foundation for the soaring guitar artistry of his long-time stage comrade Brin "Doc" Reed. Of the many venues Scotty played over the years, his favorite was the legendary "Hunter's Lodge" on Lee Highway, lost to fire in 1986. Scotty was a friend to many and will be missed. He was predeceased by his parents Jim and Lillian Bistline, his brother Jimmy, and his beloved Aunt Louise. He is survived by his brother Mark Bistline, sister-in-law Susan, nephew James and niece Daisy, all of Bristol, Rhode Island. Scotty is also survived by niece, Bennett Bistline of New York City, and leaves behind several cousins. Visitation will be held at DEMAINE FUNERAL HOME, 520 S. Washington St., Alexandria, VA 22314, (703) 549-0074, on Sunday, March 30, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment will be held on Tuesday, April 1, in Newport, PA. A music-centered event to celebrate Scotty's life will be announced shortly, with the venue to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Scotty's name to "The Music Cancer Fund @ Sweet Relief, for artists battling cancer. I just found this browsing thru Fort Hunt high School obituaries. I remember Scotty so very well as he was my boyfriend then husbands best friend in high and after. His name was Jimmy Harvie. Scotty sang at our wedding we spent many many good times together! So many laughs and I can still hear Scotty's beautiful voice and his wonderful music! I hadn't seen Scotty since 1977 but I will never forget him. Such great memories!

I was a childhood friend of Scott's. I composed a beautiful song for my thirteenth birthday. I am so sad.

OMGosh! We just heard! He was a life long friend of my husband's~Douglas Pethtal, and they were class-mates. Their 40th reunion is this weekend. Doug is devastated....he really liked hanging out with Scotty after school, and I got to meet him once up at the 7-11. He had a house down the end of my street. We drove over to see him once. Gave us some good advice on taxes after he lost his Dad. But the loss of this young man breaks my heart! I am so so sorry to the family for their loss. Doug is not even wanting to go. It's like a big part of his world. He's losing too many to make it worth going. I hate this. He was the same age as us! God Bless your family. We here if anyone needs anything but I just saw the post on the FEDERALS FB page, so I'm a little late. We apologize! <3 Rest softly Scotty! You will be so badly missed!!

To a GREAT friend! Damn, Scotty! You beat me to it! You'll be climbing up that golden hill hearing Greg Jones playing away on his sax and Tim Valdes playing all his percussion devices and his banjo. Here's a portrait of you circa 1975, buddy. Keep that Martin tuned up; you never know who might show up at Club Paradiso! In the words of the great David Byrne, “Heaven Is A Place Where Nothing, Nothing Ever Happens.” Well that sounds just fine, doesn't it? You are loved and will be missed very much. My heart goes out to Marky and your family. Take care!

Scotty: You will be dearly missed as a friend from those days when we were so invincible at FHHS to the many gigs our paths crossed those early years. Thank you for guys for letting me sit in & jam with Hole in the Wall, and for sharing your brand new D-35 with me, it did ruin me on other guitars and I was finally able to buy mine many, many years later. Keep pickin' up there, and please tell Tim we miss you guys greatly.

But will always have great memories of Mark, Scott and I killing time on a summer night with smokes, beer, tunes and the old T-Bird.

It's been many years since I've seen Scotty but he has crossed my mind from time to time. I have similar memories to Nancy H's of sitting in Tim Valdes' basement listening to them playing very inspired music.
When I blew through town in '87 (and got married), I looked him up and we met near the stone bridge in our old neighborhood late at night, just like the old days...
Goodbye Scotty.

I have known Scotty since high school and played in numerous bands with him in the 70s and 80s. I always enjoyed playing and listening to music with him, as he had an excellent knowledge of the subject. Scotty was a kind and gentle person and I will miss him. Kindest thoughts to brother Mark, I am sorry for your loss.

On behalf of Thieves Market Antiques and myself, we are saddened to hear of Scotty's sudden passing. We worked with Scotty since 2005, when handling his father, Jim's, Estate Sale.
If it weren't for Scotty, I would not have an emotional attachment and passion for Railway History.
Being a part of Scotty's life and Family Legacy will never be forgotten.

I send my prayers for healing to the Bistline family. Though my memories are worn, the sounds of sweet harmonies, nimble guitar and banjo linger on. Throughout high school Scotty, Tim Valdes, Larry McGuire, Dave Evans, Phil Wiggins and others practiced in the Valdes basement... Friend of the Devil, Long Black Veil, Paradise, My Walkin' Shoes . . .

They played with a passion and commitment that was remarkable for their young ages. Scotty was a fine musician who took his craft seriously. He was good man, talented, kind and humble. Will the circle be unbroken . . .

March 30, 2014

It will be the little things
that you will remember,
the quiet moments,
the smiles, the laughter.
And although it may seem
hard right now,
it will be the memories
of these little things
that help to push
away the pain
and bring the smiles
back again.

God bless you.

I am deeply saddened and heartbroken over the sudden passing of a dear friend. The day that Scotty called me to tell me of his cancer diagnosis I cried, and he laughed at me in a good sort of way telling me it would be okay. He always told me that he loved it when I would send him cards and letters so I began to send as many as I could to offer support as he began his fight to beat his illness. He shared his future dreams of remodeling his home, his joy at having a new, very cool, very fast car, of his continued search for the Stobart 'Alexandria' print, and even the benefits of having a good bed. Simple conversations shared through the USMail..and now they have stopped. Our friendship spanned over 30 years and through it all it was so comforting knowing Scotty was always there, always in Alexandria.
Over the past couple of months I am the most thankful for one thing that we always remembered to do when we spoke, and that was to say 'I love you' to each other as often as we could.
I'll dearly miss you Scotty, please be at peace.

To Markie and all of the Bistline family: My thoughts and prayers go out to you all as you pass through this heartbreaking and difficult period of mourning.

Scotty was a great friend. I tended bar at the Warehouse in Old Town when he was playing a lot there. I loved listening to his solo work, and his work with his bands. I had not seen Scotty in many years, and missed him greatly. I miss him all the more, now.
