After attending Grinnell College and receiving a B.A. from the University of Iowa, he began his journalism career at the Burlington (Iowa) Hawk Eye where he was an award-winning editor and columnist. In 1980, he moved to the Washington Bureau of United Press International where he excelled as an editor and officer of the Newspaper Guild. An avid student and follower of American history, politics, and the Grateful Dead, Sean also maintained more than four decades of sobriety. He is survived by his daughter and greatest accomplishment Brenda Nardone (Joe) of Arlington, grandchildren Natalie and Wilbur, four brothers and a sister. He was preceded in death by his wife Cynthia Mills, his parents, and a sister. His first marriage to Linda Kilpatrick ended in divorce.
