Dear Mrs McFarland,
I had the good fortune to interview Stan three times during the preparation of a recent book on education history in which he featured prominently, as a subtle, effective and bipartisan exponent of education politics. He opened the first meeting in 2002 by attributing his longevity (despite indifferent health) to your love and nutritional guidance, and he punctuated all three conversations with appreciative and proud references to his wonderful family. My heart goes out to you all at this dreadful time.
Best wishes

Dear Nancy, Jeff and family,
My sincere sympathy to each of you on the passing of your beloved husband and father, a wonderful human being.
I was privileged to work alongside Stan when his office was next to mine at the school administrators (AASA).
He taught me much about education and the politics relating to it in Washington. What a career he had... he nearly singlehandedly won the battle to create the Department of Education; and he made NEA the education lobbying powerhouse of Washington. I loved hearing his stories of Washington and the Hill, past and present.
He spoke so often of his dear wife and children and most especially his grandchildren. Their achievements; the hunting trips.
You could tell how much he loved his family; he was so proud to tell me on each anniversary how long he and Nancy had been married.
He will be greatly missed by so many. Thank you for sharing him with those of us who worked with him. Most sincerely, nick

He was loving husband, father, and grandfather. He will be missed greatly. I'll never forget the twinkle in his eyes when he offered me sparkling cider for the toast at Becky & Bobby's wedding.
