SEWELL

STEPHEN F. SEWELL

Stephen F. Sewell, of Arlington, VA, passed away September 26, 2023 at the age of 85. Steve was born March 23, 1938 in Toledo, Ohio to the late Herbert and Anna (Broene) Sewell; he was the youngest of three sons. Like his parents and brothers before him, Steve obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan (his was in Anthropology). Steve later earned his JDD from the University of Wisconsin law school. After serving in the US Army from 1961 to 1966, Steve went to work as an attorney for the Federal Communications Commission until his retirement in March 1993.

Steve had many interests, including a love of aviation (including avian as he was an avid birder), museums, art, and his family. It was very common for Steve to pepper his drives to Wisconsin to visit family with stops to museums large and small along the way, where he may pick up a mug for his massive coffee mug collection and a story to share. He was also a lifelong University of Michigan football fan, and enjoyed sharing stories of traveling up to Ann Arbor as a boy to catch a game with his older brothers.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Anna Sewell, his brothers Robert and Richard and his sister-in-law Natalie Sewell. He leaves behind two nieces and a nephew, AJ (Sarah) Love of Madison, WI, Devorah (Yossi) Schwartz of Mequon, WI, and Rebecca (Matt Dudley) Sewell of Madison, WI, along with 12 great-nieces and nephews. Steve had a very kind and gentle soul and his nieces and nephews enjoyed spending time with him, hearing his stories and laughing along with his wry sense of humor. He will be missed!

Since Steve didn't want a ceremony, please feel free to pay your respects by donating to your local library, museum, or university in his honor.

Steve and my late husband Roy Stewart worked at the FCC together until Steve's retirement. Steve remained a good friend to Roy, until Roy passed away a few years ago, as well as to me and my now adult daughters who knew him as "Uncle Steve" who took them to the vending machines at the FCC. He was a permanent part of our Christmas Eve for dinners for many years. He was part of our family, and we will remember him fondly.

A good natured man with many friends at the FCC. Our careers there coincided. I remember seeing Stephen in front of 1919 M Street with Fred Goldsmith and Dan Ohlbaum on their way to lunch
